Bapté Sprints to Bronze in Birmingham
French hurdler Laëticia Bapté secured the bronze medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, clocking a time of 12.73 seconds.
Her podium finish on Tuesday evening marked France’s second medal of the competition. It followed a bronze in the 5,000 meters won by Étienne Daguinos earlier in the week.
A Photo Finish at the Top
The gold medal was claimed by Netherlands competitor Nadine Visser. Visser crossed the finish line in 12.67 seconds.
She matched the time of Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska, who took the silver medal after the two athletes were separated by thousandths of a second.
Overcoming a Challenging Year
For Bapté, the result ended a challenging competitive cycle. Speaking to reporters in tears after the race, the French athlete acknowledged the emotional weight of the achievement.
According to reports from the event, she noted that she had anticipated this level of success for a long time following a difficult year.
Caribbean Roots Drive Continental Success
Originally from Martinique and based in Guadeloupe where she trains under coach Ketty Cham, the US Robert club licensee built her foundation on Caribbean tracks before breaking through on the continental stage.
Strong Showing for the French Delegation
France placed a second athlete in the starting blocks for the final. Sacha Alessandrini completed the race in sixth position, rounding out a strong collective showing for the French hurdles contingent in the event.
The bronze adds to the French delegation’s early tally in Birmingham. On Monday, middle-distance runner Étienne Daguinos captured bronze in the 5,000-meter race, while teammate Jimmy Gressier finished just outside the medals in fourth place.
