Adley Rutschman made his first appearance in the Boston Red Sox organization on Saturday afternoon, playing five innings behind the plate for Triple-A Worcester in a game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Polar Park. The three-time All-Star catcher was acquired earlier in the week in a blockbuster trade with the Baltimore Orioles. Sidelined since July 18 due to left wrist inflammation, Rutschman wasted little time showing his defensive instincts upon taking the field.
Defensive Impact and Offensive Production at Polar Park
Working alongside Triple-A WooSox right-hander Gage Ziehl, Rutschman quickly asserted his presence in the opening frame. Ziehl hit centerfielder Colby Thomas with a pitch one out into the contest, but Rutschman erased the baserunner immediately by throwing Thomas out trying to steal second base.
Batting leadoff for Worcester, Rutschman reached base multiple times during a relentless offensive surge that ultimately built a 15-0 lead over the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate. In the first inning alone, he stepped to the plate twice, drawing a leadoff walk and coming around to score the game’s opening run on an RBI single by Romy Gonzalez. He later flayed out on seven pitches to cap that five-run opening frame.
After drawing a two-out walk in the third inning that yielded no further damage, Rutschman delivered a pivotal blow in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, he lined a two-run double to right field, stretching the WooSox lead to 11-0 before scoring himself on a subsequent single by Nate Eaton.

Rutschman exited the contest after five innings of work, replaced behind the plate by pinch-hitter Jason Delay. He finished his afternoon going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, checking every box in his first competitive action in weeks.

The rehabilitation assignment continues on Sunday, with Rutschman scheduled to serve as the designated hitter for Worcester. Following Sunday’s contest, Red Sox leadership will assess whether the catcher requires additional minor league at-bats or is ready to join the Major League club directly in Toronto for a four-game series beginning Monday night.
