Mohamed Abdilaahi Withdraws From European Championships
German distance running standout Mohamed Abdilaahi has withdrawn from the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham due to a foot injury, missing what was widely anticipated to be a strong bid for the 5,000-meter title, according to an official announcement from the German Athletics Association (DLV).
Foot Injury Derails Months of Preparation
The 27-year-old national record holder was forced to pull out of the continental championships, which begin on Monday, after failing to recover from physical setbacks that already kept him out of the German Championships in Bochum. Abdilaahi confirmed that foot trouble disrupted his training block over the final three weeks ahead of the meet, leaving him unable to complete a proper preparation.
„Fußprobleme haben mich in den letzten drei Wochen ausgebremst. Ich habe sie nicht rechtzeitig in den Griff bekommen, sodass eine vernünftige Vorbereitung einfach nicht möglich war und ich jetzt schweren Händen diese Entscheidung treffen musste“, Abdilaahi stated in a release published by the German Athletics Association, explaining that he made the difficult decision with a heavy heart after running out of time to get healthy.
A Major Blow to German Medal Hopes
The absence of the Mönchengladbach-native deals a heavy blow to the German team’s medal prospects. Entering the championships, Abdilaahi ranked as a prime contender for the gold medal in the opening 5,000-meter event scheduled for Monday.
His upward trajectory over the past year included breaking several long-standing national marks previously held by Olympic champion Dieter Baumann across the 3,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-meter distances, alongside strong performances on the Diamond League circuit.
DLV Leadership Responds to the Setback
„Das ist sehr bitter für Mo und das gesamte Team. Er hat sich mit herausragenden Leistungen in dieser Saison die EM-Teilnahme mehr als verdient“, said DLV Sport Director Jörg Bügner, acknowledging the disappointment for both the athlete and the wider delegation.
Outlook on Recovery and Return
Abdilaahi now aims to focus on a complete recovery, leaving open the possibility of returning to competition during the final phase of the outdoor track and field season.
