The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Taylor Ward from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday ahead of the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. In exchange, the Orioles received a package of three right-handed pitchers: Alex Hoppe, Harrison Kreiling, and Brock Moore.

The deal addresses a major offensive need for Seattle, whose right-handed hitters struggled mightily throughout the season. Entering the week, Mariners right-handers ranked near the bottom of the major leagues in batting average (.225, 27th), on-base percentage (.305, 25th), slugging percentage (.361, last), OPS (.666, 28th), and home runs (49, 27th). The team also began the week with a .650 OPS against left-handed pitching, which stood as the second-lowest mark in the majors.

Ward’s Production and Discipline Bolsters Seattle Lineup
Ward, who is set to hit free agency at the conclusion of the season, brings high-level plate discipline to the sports.yahoo.com. His 14.3% chase rate is the lowest recorded by any Major League Baseball player this season, providing a sharp contrast to a Seattle team that posted a 32% chase rate as a club—eighth highest in the majors.
During his time with Baltimore this season, the 32-year-old veteran played in 111 games, batting .246 with 20 doubles, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, and a .729 OPS. He also drew 87 walks, leading the American League in that category. Baltimore Restocks Pitching Pipeline at Deadline
For Baltimore, the trade forms part of a broader shift toward the future after the club slipped to a 54-58 record, placing them fourth in the American League East and 2.5 games behind the final American League Wild Card spot. Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias stated that the front office targeted “baseball moves” and exchanges of talent to improve the organization’s overall talent level.
The return package brings three arms at varying stages of development:
- Alex Hoppe: The 27-year-old right-hander is the most experienced pitcher in the trade. He made 24 relief appearances for Seattle this season, posting a 5.79 ERA with a 27.6% strikeout rate out of the bullpen. Hoppe was originally a sixth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2022 before being traded to Seattle last November.
- Brock Moore: The 26-year-old was selected by Seattle in the seventh round of the 2024 Draft. He features a fastball in the upper 90s that has reached 100 mph. This season, he posted a 1.13 ERA in 13 relief outings for High-A Everett before struggling upon promotion to Double-A Arkansas, where he recorded a 5.56 ERA over 18 appearances.
- Harrison Kreiling: Selected by the Mariners in the 17th round of the 2024 Draft, the 24-year-old right-hander made his professional debut this year after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He posted a 2.08 ERA in three starts in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League and tossed two scoreless innings in his debut for Single-A Inland Empire.
With Ward approaching free agency, the Orioles opted to move the veteran outfielder to secure additional organizational depth and young pitching upside for their farm system, while Ward finishes out the remainder of his contract pursuing a postseason berth with Seattle.
