The body of renowned mountaineer and Netflix documentary star Nirmal Purja has been located at approximately 5,700 meters on Broad Peak in Pakistan, though recovery efforts remain stalled due to severe weather and treacherous terrain, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Purja and a nine-person international expedition team were struck by a massive avalanche while attempting to summit the 8,047-meter peak in the Karakorum mountain range.
Recovery Operations and Site Conditions on Broad Peak
Ground rescue teams managed to reach Purja’s remains at the 5,700-meter mark, with the immediate operational objective of transporting the body down to a Japanese camp. However, Niala Kiani, a spokesperson for the Alpine Club of Pakistan, stated that conditions for the recovery operation on Earth’s twelfth-highest mountain are extremely difficult. Rescue teams resumed operations after treacherous weather forced a temporary suspension of the search.
The fatal avalanche hit the ten-person expedition on a Thursday as the group climbed at roughly 6,600 meters toward the summit of Broad Peak. While rescue teams have successfully recovered three bodies, four deceased climbers—including Purja—have been located but remain on the mountain. Alongside the Nepalese mountaineer, the international climbing group included victims from the United States, Oman, and Nepal.
The Record-Breaking Ambition Behind the Final Expedition
Prior to the fatal ascent, Purja had outlined his historic goal on the social media platform X. Having successfully climbed Gasherbrum II, another of Pakistan’s 8,000-meter peaks, he aimed to become the first person to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks twice without supplemental oxygen. Climbing Broad Peak was a late addition to that specific itinerary.
Purja achieved global recognition through the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible, which chronicled his record-setting mountaineering exploits and explored the razor-thin margin between survival and tragedy in extreme high-altitude environments. He also detailed his extraordinary career in his bestselling autobiography published under his moniker, Nimsdai Purja.
Geography and Hazards of the Karakorum Range
Broad Peak straddles the border between Pakistan and China in the high northern reaches of the Karakorum range.
Authorities have not yet announced a confirmed timeline for when ground teams will be able to safely complete the extraction of the remaining bodies from the upper slopes of the mountain due to the ongoing weather risks.
