On-Pitch Clash at Yankee Stadium
The confrontation unfolded in front of the crowd in New York City after Rio Ngumoha scored a deflected second-half strike to settle the match against Championship opposition. New footage captured an animated back-and-forth between Jones and Szoboszlai that lasted for around two minutes, with both players waving their arms, pointing across the pitch, and pressing their fingers into each other’s chests. After Jones had embraced manager Andoni Iraola, he could be seen trading words with Szoboszlai as he walked past his teammate, causing the Hungary international to turn back and continue their back-and-forth.
The dispute appeared to stem from earlier on-field events. During the match, Szoboszlai had handed his captain’s armband to Kostas Tsimikas rather than Jones when he was subbed off, and during the subsequent post-match argument, Tsimikas was filmed throwing the armband on to the floor.
Fellow teammates Jeremie Frimpong and Kostas Tsimikas eventually approached to attempt to cool the pair down. Although Jones was initially guided away by Frimpong, he continued to gesticulate before walking back towards Szoboszlai, prompting a member of the Liverpool coaching team to step in and speak to Szoboszlai before the situation was finally calmed down.
Summer Transfer Speculation and Contract Status
The on-field disagreement arrives amid mounting speculation surrounding Jones’s long-term future at Anfield. The 25-year-old midfielder has one year left on his current deal at Anfield, having entered the final 12 months of his contract which expires next summer. Italian giants Inter Milan have pursued the player throughout the summer, having previously had a £21.7m offer rejected by the club earlier in the summer, followed by a second approach that was also rejected since the end of last season.
Interest from Serie A remains strong, with talkSPORT understanding that Liverpool will not allow Jones to leave the club unless their valuation is met. Despite the external interest and the player’s uncertain contract situation, manager Andoni Iraola has consistently voiced his desire to keep the midfielder earlier this month.
