Notre Dame Athletics secured a historic six-year partnership with SoFi Technologies on Tuesday, featuring a jersey patch deal valued between $18 million and $20 million annually. The agreement makes SoFi the first non-apparel brand on Fighting Irish uniforms and surpasses Ohio State’s newly announced pact with JPMorgan Chase for the richest patch deal in college sports history.
The modern era of college athletics entered a new financial frontier this week as athletic departments race to build revenue streams capable of supporting rising roster and retention costs. Following a January ruling from the NCAA that cleared the way for commercial branding on uniforms, programs across the country have moved swiftly to monetize their jerseys. Notre Dame’s agreement with SoFi places the financial services company’s logo on uniforms across all 26 varsity sports starting in the 2026–27 academic year, as reported by Notre Dame Athletics.
SoFi Agreement Values and the Race for Jersey Sponsorships
Industry sources indicate that the six-year contract is worth an average of $18 million to $20 million annually, placing it at the top of the collegiate landscape. The announcement arrived just hours after Ohio State unveiled a landmark agreement with JPMorgan Chase for its 36 varsity sports, which pays approximately $17 million per year. While Ohio State’s deal set a record earlier in the day, Notre Dame’s partnership immediately surpassed it.

The financial figures underscore the escalating cost of competing in modern college athletics. With the House v. NCAA settlement dismantling traditional business models and introducing direct athlete compensation, athletic department salary caps and player retention expenses have climbed well past initial projections. Programs are leaning heavily into corporate sponsorships to cover these expenditures without sacrificing their competitive standing.
Protecting the Minimalist Aesthetic at Notre Dame Stadium
Despite the addition of the corporate patch, university officials emphasized that traditional visual elements of the program will remain untouched. The iconic gold helmets, blue home jerseys, road white jerseys, and gold pants will endure without alteration, and Notre Dame Stadium will continue its long-standing policy of remaining free of in-stadium corporate advertising.
“We wanted to do this in the Notre Dame style of doing things. Think of the 2024 season, we had patches on our jerseys almost 25% of the time with all the bowl games. We’ve crossed that Rubicon. But this relationship with SoFi isn’t just a patch on the jersey. It’s about helping all our student-athletes.”

The partnership was facilitated by Notre Dame Global Partnerships, a joint venture between Legends Global and JMI Sports formed to build integrated commercial agreements. According to Sports Illustrated, the only commercial logos visible inside Notre Dame Stadium remain those of broadcast partner NBC and its streaming service, Peacock.
Funding Walk-On Scholarships and the ‘4 for Forever’ Campaign
A core component of the multi-year collaboration involves direct financial support for student-athletes beyond standard athletic funding. SoFi is committing to an annual grant directed toward the university’s “4 for Forever” campaign, which underwrites scholarships across all 26 sports and provides financial education, career development, and professional mentorship.
Additionally, the agreement establishes the SoFi Champions Scholarship, a program dedicated to walk-on student-athletes. The initiative will annually award a one-year full-tuition scholarship to one male and one female walk-on who demonstrate resilience, leadership, and service.
“The grit, discipline and determination of Notre Dame’s student-athletes reflect the same ambition we see in our members every day. We are proud to partner with Notre Dame Athletics to help inspire the next generation and create opportunities that will shape their financial futures.”

As athletic departments navigate the post-settlement environment, postseason organizers are also examining commercial expansion. Bleacher Report noted that the College Football Playoff is exploring the approval of additional sponsorship patches for postseason play, signaling that uniform branding will likely expand beyond the regular season in the near future.
