However, none of the five edge rushers who fought for time opposite Aidan Hutchinson last season remain in Detroit for 2026. Starter Marcus Davenport failed to stay healthy, was not re-signed, and remains a free agent. Josh Paschal spent the entire 2025 season on the non-football injury (NFI) list and was eventually released, Tyrus Wheat returned to Dallas after minimal opportunities, and Pat O’Connor retired in the offseason. Al-Quadin Muhammad provided 11 sacks in 2025 as the most productive pass rusher opposite Hutchinson, but at 250 pounds, he struggled to set the edge in the run game and ultimately signed a more lucrative contract with the Buccaneers.
New Additions and Roster Turnover
With only Hutchinson and Ahmed Hassanein returning for 2026—with Hassanein having split his time between recovering from injury and the practice squad—the Lions heavily turned over their edge personnel. According to The New York Times, the team selected Derrick Moore with the 44th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Additionally, Prideofdetroit notes that the team also added Payton Turner. While the group maintains a balanced skill set, Turner is the only newcomer who tips the scales over 265 pounds.
The coaching staff has seemingly invested in multiple edge rushers who are slightly lighter than traditional preferences, placing a greater emphasis on pass-rush juice while maintaining the ability to set the edge. On a defensive front featuring Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, and Tyleik Williams, incoming veterans will not need to carry a superstar burden.
Training Camp Battles and Expectations
A primary training camp question centers on who will start opposite Hutchinson between DJ Wonnum and Derrick Moore. While the coaching staff typically leans toward veterans early in such circumstances, giving Wonnum the initial nod to begin camp, he is expected to split time in a rotation with Moore. How evenly those snaps are distributed will rely on how quickly Moore adapts to the NFL level, though his experience in a pro-style scheme at Michigan leaves the team comfortable taking their time with his development.
The wider 2026 training camp runs from July 25 to August 27 at the Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park, Michigan, as reported by ESPN. Holmes noted that while every offseason is taken seriously, there is added “fire” and urgency to reestablish the team’s gritty identity following a fourth-place NFC North finish and missed postseason in 2025.
