McGregor Suffers Suspected ACL Injury in UFC 329 TKO Loss to Holloway
LAS VEGAS — Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the Octagon ended in a premature and devastating fashion on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, as a suspected ACL injury forced a stoppage just 1:09 into his main event bout against Max Holloway.
The fight, which marked McGregor’s first appearance in more than five years, concluded shortly after the Irishman launched a flying left roundhouse kick at the start of the match. Upon landing, McGregor appeared to buckle on his right knee. Despite attempting to continue, the 37-year-old was unable to maintain his footing, leading the referee to wave off the contest.

Medical Assessment and Post-Fight Statements
UFC CEO Dana White confirmed that while an official diagnosis is pending, medical staff at the event suspect a torn ACL. “We’re assuming a blown ACL. That’s what I assumed when I saw it, and that’s what the doctors think, too,” White told reporters at the post-fight news conference.
McGregor addressed the incident on social media following the event, stating that he had no pre-existing injuries heading into the bout. “I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight,” McGregor wrote. He described his frustration, noting that the injury “came out of nowhere.”
White also refuted speculation that the injury was sustained prior to the event, noting that McGregor appeared in good condition during the weigh-ins and press conferences. Following the bout, McGregor was seen leaving the arena in his fight gear, reportedly to undergo further medical evaluation. He is expected to receive a medical suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, though the duration of that suspension remains to be determined.

Max Holloway’s Reaction and Fight Context
For Max Holloway (28-9-0), the victory marked a significant turn in his career, leveling his head-to-head record against McGregor at 1-1. The two fighters previously met 13 years ago in Boston, where McGregor won by unanimous decision.
Reflecting on the brief encounter, Holloway noted that he was not surprised by McGregor’s aggressive opening move. “I wasn’t surprised at all to see McGregor throw that running high kick because that’s how he likes to start fights historically,” Holloway said. He added that he was prepared for the contest and expressed disappointment in the outcome. “I want to actually feel what this 170 weight cracking and power he says he has,” Holloway stated. “We can do it back. Right now I’m just praying for the guy.”
The bout was contested at welterweight, a step up in weight class for both former featherweight champions. Heading into the fight, Holloway was a -300 favorite at Bet MGM Sportsbook, while McGregor was a +240 underdog.
