Atlético de Madrid has finalized the acquisition of Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP for €40 million. The 27-year-old international has committed his future to the Metropolitano Stadium, putting pen to paper on a contract that runs through June 30, 2031.

The urgency to recruit was driven by the recurring physical setbacks of Johnny Cardoso, whose availability remained inconsistent throughout the year. With Pablo Barrios battling injuries and captain Koke now 34, the need for reinforcement became acute. Hjulmand, a right-footed defensive midfielder, offers the versatility to disrupt opposition play while maintaining composure in possession.
From Admira Wacker to the Metropolitano
Hjulmand’s rise to the Spanish capital followed a circuitous route. After an unsuccessful attempt to join the Arsenal youth academy, he launched his professional career with Admira Wacker in Austria. His trajectory accelerated in 2020 after moving to Italian club Lecce, where he helped secure promotion to Serie A.
Sporting CP acquired him in 2023 for a reported fee of nearly €20 million. In Lisbon, Hjulmand became an indispensable starter, logging 141 appearances across all competitions. His output of 10 goals and 12 assists, paired with a run to the Champions League quarterfinals, secured his place in the Danish national squad for the 2024 European Championship.
