Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Goals
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) highlights that renewable energy capacity additions hit a record high in 2023, with solar and wind leading the charge. The agency states that 1,100 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity was added globally last year—an increase of 18% over 2022.
Solar power alone accounted for 60% of all new installations, while wind energy saw a 12% rise in capacity additions. The report underscores that these figures reflect a broader shift away from fossil fuels, with countries like China, the United States, and India contributing significantly to the growth.

“The transition to renewables is accelerating faster than ever,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are witnessing a historic shift in the global energy landscape, driven by policy commitments and technological advancements.”
IRENA projects that by 2030, renewables could supply 40% of the world’s electricity demand, up from 30% in 2022. This aligns with the Paris Agreement’s goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
However, challenges remain. The agency warns that current investment levels are still insufficient to meet the $4 trillion annual funding required by 2030 to fully decarbonize the energy sector. Financing gaps persist, particularly in developing nations.
In related news, the European Union announced plans to expand its offshore wind capacity to 60 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, nearly doubling its current capacity. The move is part of the EU’s broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Meanwhile, the United States saw a 15% increase in renewable energy installations in 2023, with Texas and California leading the way. The Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act has been credited with spurring this growth, offering tax incentives for clean energy projects.
Despite the progress, experts caution that two-thirds of the world’s population still lacks access to reliable renewable energy sources. IRENA emphasizes the need for equitable energy transitions to ensure no one is left behind.
