Fact-Checked: Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Crisis
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) revealed that global renewable energy capacity additions hit a record high in 2023, defying economic slowdowns and geopolitical tensions. The agency’s annual statistics show that new installations of solar, wind, and hydro power outpaced all other energy sources for the sixth consecutive year.

According to IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera, “The renewable energy transition is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Last year alone, we saw the equivalent of the world’s entire power demand in 2000 added through renewables.” The report highlights that solar and wind energy now account for 83% of all new power generation capacity installed globally, up from 70% in 2022.
China remained the world’s largest contributor, adding 127 gigawatts of new renewable capacity—nearly triple the amount installed in the European Union, which added 51 gigawatts. The United States followed with 32 gigawatts of new installations, marking its strongest year in over a decade.
The report also underscores the cost competitiveness of renewables, with solar photovoltaic (PV) power now the cheapest energy source in most regions. IRENA estimates that solar and wind energy projects now require 50% less capital expenditure per megawatt than just five years ago, making them increasingly attractive to investors.
However, challenges persist. The agency warns that to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C warming limit, global renewable capacity must triple by 2030—a target that would require annual additions to reach 1,100 gigawatts by the end of the decade. Currently, the world is on track for additions of roughly 400 gigawatts annually, leaving a significant gap.
“While progress is remarkable, it is not yet sufficient,” La Camera stated. “The energy transition must accelerate if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.” The report calls for increased policy support, streamlined permitting processes, and greater private sector investment to bridge the gap.
In related developments, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) reported that wind power installations grew by 17% in 2023, with offshore wind projects seeing particularly strong demand in Europe and Asia. Meanwhile, the International Hydropower Association noted that large-scale hydro projects remain critical for grid stability, though their growth has slowed due to environmental concerns.
As governments and businesses grapple with energy security and decarbonization, the IRENA report serves as a stark reminder: the renewable energy revolution is underway, but its pace must quicken to avert climate catastrophe.
