Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Ahead of 2030 Targets

A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reveals that renewable energy capacity additions in 2023 reached record levels, with solar and wind power leading the charge. According to the agency, global renewable energy installations grew by over 50% compared to 2022.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations dominated the growth, accounting for more than half of all new renewable capacity. Wind energy also saw significant expansion, particularly in Europe and Asia, where offshore wind farms are becoming increasingly common. The report highlights that China alone added over 150 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity last year.

“The shift towards renewables is accelerating faster than anticipated,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are seeing unprecedented levels of investment and deployment, which is crucial for meeting climate goals.”

“Renewable energy is no longer a niche sector—it is the backbone of the global energy transition.”

The report projects that if current trends continue, renewable energy could supply more than 60% of global electricity by 2030, up from around 30% today. This would mark a dramatic shift in the energy landscape, reducing reliance on coal and natural gas.

However, challenges remain. The agency warns that over 100 countries still lack adequate policies to support renewable energy deployment, particularly in developing nations where financing and infrastructure gaps persist.

In Africa, renewable energy adoption is growing rapidly, with several countries now generating more than 50% of their electricity from renewables. Morocco, for example, has become a leader in concentrated solar power (CSP), with its Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex being one of the largest of its kind in the world.

The IRENA report also emphasizes the need for improved grid infrastructure to integrate the growing share of intermittent renewable sources. Without upgrades, hundreds of gigawatts of potential renewable capacity could remain unused due to transmission bottlenecks.

Despite these hurdles, the outlook remains optimistic. The agency estimates that renewable energy investments could create over 42 million jobs worldwide by 2030, up from 13 million in 2022.
