HSV Launches Multi-Million Euro Project to Boost Volksparkstadion Capacity
Hamburger SV is set to launch a multi-million euro initiative aimed at enhancing the Volksparkstadion experience and increasing its capacity, leveraging a new Supporters Trust model that allows fans to directly invest in the club’s future.
The project, confirmed by club officials, will focus on upgrading facilities including expanded sanitation, improved catering, new safety netting, and the creation of a dedicated fan zone before and after matches. These improvements are designed to elevate the matchday experience although laying the groundwork for a long-term stadium expansion.
According to HSV President Henrik Köncke, the Supporters Trust represents a historic step in fan engagement, enabling supporters to become indirect shareholders through cooperative shares. The initiative was formally approved by HSV’s members at an extraordinary general meeting on June 21, 2025, clearing the way for its launch.
Head coach Merlin Polzin and several professional players have joined as founding members of the Trust, each contributing a minimum of 887 euros to secure their stake. Polzin emphasized the unity behind the project, stating that the initiative fosters a collective spirit both on and off the pitch.
The Volksparkstadion currently holds 57,000 spectators, with plans to increase capacity to over 60,000 in the long term. While the initial phase focuses on qualitative improvements, the Trust’s funding structure is designed to support future structural upgrades.
The founding assembly of the Supporters Trust is scheduled for May 5, 2026, at the Volksparkstadion, marking the official start of the fan-driven investment model.
By channeling fan investments into the Trust, HSV aims to bypass legal restrictions that prevent the club’s nonprofit arm from directly purchasing shares in its commercial arm, HSV Fußball AG & Co. KGaA. The Trust will use pooled funds to acquire new shares, with proceeds directed toward stadium enhancements.
This approach aligns with broader trends in European football where clubs seek innovative ways to deepen fan involvement while financing infrastructure projects through community-backed mechanisms.
As HSV prepares for the Trust’s launch, the club underscores that the initiative is not merely financial but symbolic—a reaffirmation of the bond between the team and its supporters in shaping the club’s future.
Fans interested in participating can join the Trust through the official HSV website, where further details about membership and contribution levels are available.
The next step in the process is the founding assembly on May 5, 2026, which will formalize the Trust’s operations and set the stage for initial investments in stadium improvements.
