Danish Badminton Team Faces Setback as Rasmus Gemke Withdraws Before Thomas & Uber Cup
Just two days before Denmark’s badminton men’s team was set to begin their Thomas & Uber Cup campaign on home soil in Horsens, a significant blow arrived: Rasmus Gemke withdrew due to a foot injury. The withdrawal came as a major setback for the Danish squad, which had been preparing for the prestigious team world championship.
Gemke, who was slated to play a crucial role as Denmark’s second men’s singles player, announced his withdrawal through an official statement. In his message, he expressed deep disappointment at not being able to compete alongside his teammates in front of the home crowd.
“It is a huge, huge disappointment for me not to be able to participate in Horsens. I had looked forward very much to playing the World Championships together with the other players, but unfortunately it was not to be. I will have to settle for cheering them on and cheering on the women in front of the TV and wish them all the best and good luck in Horsens.”
The timing of Gemke’s withdrawal proved particularly problematic for Denmark’s chances. Prior to his injury, the Danish men’s team had held a slight advantage in their group, but Gemke’s absence shifted them into the underdog position. His role as the second singles player was considered vital for securing key wins in the team competition.
Team officials acknowledged the significant impact of losing Gemke at such a late stage. Denmark’s head coach Thomas Stavngaard described the withdrawal as a “major loss” for the squad, noting that the team’s path to advancement had turn into considerably more hard following an already challenging group draw.
“it is a major loss for us to have to do without Rasmus. The task at the Thomas Cup was already difficult with a tough group draw, and this withdrawal makes it even harder. It will not be easy to advance from the group, but we still believe in it and will fight with everything we have to make it happen.”
In response to the vacancy left by Gemke’s withdrawal, the Danish Badminton Federation promptly called up 19-year-old William Bøgebjerg as his replacement. The young player joined a singles lineup that also includes Anders Antonsen, Magnus Johannesen, and Ditlev Jæger Holm for the competition.
The Thomas & Uber Cup 2026 commenced on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Forum Horsens, featuring ten days of elite badminton competition. Denmark’s men’s team began their campaign facing an uphill battle following Gemke’s unexpected withdrawal, which had transformed their pre-tournament outlook from cautious optimism to concerned realism.
As the tournament progressed, the Danish squad would need to rely on the experience of Anders Antonsen and the emerging talent of their younger players to navigate the challenges posed by Gemke’s absence. The withdrawal served as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in elite sports, particularly when key players are sidelined at critical moments.
