Nick Olij Set for PSV Debut Against PEC Zwolle: ‘He Deserves It’
PSV Eindhoven head coach Peter Bosz has confirmed that Nick Olij will craft his debut for the Eredivisie champions in Wednesday evening’s match against PEC Zwolle. The announcement came during Bosz’s pre-match press conference in Eindhoven on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
“Nick Olij staat woensdagavond onder de Eindhovense lat als landskampioen PSV aantreedt tegen PEC Zwolle,” Bosz stated, confirming the goalkeeper’s first appearance for the club since his summer transfer.
The 30-year-old Dutch goalkeeper joined PSV on a four-year deal on June 12, 2025, after spending the previous three seasons with Sparta Rotterdam. Despite signing as the club’s novel number one goalkeeper, Olij has waited for his opportunity to debut in an official match.
Bosz praised Olij’s professional attitude and contributions to the squad, explaining his decision to deliver the veteran goalkeeper his first start: “Hij verdient het, dat heb ik Matej (Kovar, red.) ook uitgelegd.” The coach highlighted Olij’s importance in the dressing room, noting his vocal leadership and positive influence despite limited playing time.
“Nick heeft een heel ongelukkig seizoen. Ik heb hem leren kennen als een goede gozer. Hij is belangrijk voor ons in de kleedkamer, omdat hij één van de weinigen is die voor de wedstrijd zijn mond opentrekt en probeert de boel aan te zwengelen. Dat waardeer ik enorm,” Bosz added, acknowledging the challenges Olij has faced during the 2025-26 campaign.
The match against PEC Zwolle represents more than just a debut opportunity for Olij. A victory would secure PSV’s 27th Eredivisie title in club history, with the team planning a championship celebration trip to Ibiza following the game.
“Na afloop van dat duel gaan de Eindhovenaren de 27ste landstitel in de clubhistorie vieren met een kampioensreis op Ibiza,” Bosz revealed, noting that the squad had originally planned free time that weekend but chose to celebrate together instead.
PSV will enter the match without several key players due to suspension and injury concerns. Bosz confirmed that Paul Wanner and Noah Fernandez are suspended, while additional players remain questionable for selection.
“De groep is kleiner dan normaal,” the coach admitted, acknowledging the depleted squad depth. Despite the absences, Bosz expects his team to approach the match with their usual intensity, particularly noting the motivation of players aiming for optimal condition ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
For Olij, the moment represents the culmination of years of perseverance in Dutch football. The Haarlem-born goalkeeper began his professional career with AZ’s youth system before making senior appearances for Jong AZ and earning loan spells at TOP Oss. He established himself as a reliable starter during his time at NAC Breda (101 appearances from 2019-2022) and Sparta Rotterdam (99 appearances from 2022-2025) before his move to PSV.
Olij’s international experience includes representing the Netherlands at various youth levels. He was the starting goalkeeper for the Dutch squad that won the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, saving the decisive penalty in the final shoot-out. He also featured for the Netherlands U18 and U19 teams before receiving his first senior national team call-up in October 2023 for UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and Greece.
The Philips Stadion in Eindhoven will host the Eredivisie encounter, with kickoff scheduled for Wednesday evening local time. As PSV aims to secure the league title, Olij prepares to make his long-awaited debut between the posts for the Eindhoven giants.
The match against PEC Zwolle will serve as an significant checkpoint for both Olij’s personal development and PSV’s season objectives. A strong performance could cement his position as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper moving forward, while contributing to the club’s historic title aspirations.
As the Eredivisie season reaches its conclusion, all eyes will be on the Philips Stadion to witness whether Nick Olij finally gets his opportunity to showcase his abilities at the highest level of Dutch football with PSV Eindhoven.
