Plzeň Roster Shake-up: Seven Departures and the Pursuit of Dominik Kubalík

HC Škoda Plzeň is aggressively reshaping its roster for the upcoming season, balancing a significant exodus of veteran talent with the pursuit of a high-profile offensive upgrade. The Czech club recently confirmed the departure of seven players, while reports indicate that management is actively working to bring Dominik Kubalík back to the West Bohemian side.

The transition marks a pivotal moment for the Tipsport Extraliga team. While the loss of key defensive anchors creates immediate gaps in the lineup, the potential arrival of Kubalík—a mainstay of the Czech national team—could signal a shift in the team’s offensive philosophy.

The Defensive Void: Zámorský and Lajunen Exit

The most immediate concern for Plzeň is the depletion of its blue line. The club is parting ways with four defensemen: Petr Zámorský, Ville Lajunen, Radim Šalda, and David Kvasnička. Of these, Zámorský and Lajunen represented the core of the team’s production from the back end.

Petr Zámorský, 33, leaves Plzeň after four seasons. He was the team’s most productive defenseman this year, recording 28 points (11 goals and 17 assists) across 49 regular-season games. He is expected to continue his career with Mladá Boleslav.

Joining him in departure is 38-year-old Ville Lajunen. After a single season in the Czech Republic, the Finnish veteran is returning to his home country. Lajunen finished the regular season as the team’s second-most productive defenseman with 22 points and added one assist during the playoff run.

For a global audience unfamiliar with the Extraliga’s structure, these departures represent a loss of nearly 50 combined points from the defensive unit, placing significant pressure on the front office to find replacements who can both defend and transition the puck effectively.

Offensive Turnover and the Kubalík Connection

The roster churn extends to the forward lines, where Adam Kubík, Adrián Holešinský, and Jakub Šiler will not return to the club. The most notable exit is Slovak international Adrián Holešinský. In a mid-season move, Plzeň had already traded Holešinský to České Budějovice in exchange for Adam Kubík. During his tenure with Škoda this season, Holešinský appeared in 41 games, tallying four goals and 12 assists.

As the club clears space, the focus has shifted toward Dominik Kubalík. Reports indicate that Plzeň is “tapping” the forward, with Martin Straka having held discussions with Kubalík’s agent. Kubalík remains a high-value target given his standing as a national team staple; he is currently preparing with the Czech national squad for the World Championships.

The pursuit of Kubalík suggests that Plzeň is looking for a “bombshell” signing to offset the loss of veteran depth and elevate the team’s ceiling for the next campaign.

While seven departures are official, the roster remains in flux. Forward Jakub Lev is among those whose future with the club remains uncertain, adding another layer of volatility to the off-season planning.
