Jason Benetti Takes the Helm as NBC’s Lead Voice for Sunday Night Baseball

NBC Sports is returning to Major League Baseball with a high-profile acquisition of the “Sunday Night Baseball” package, and the network has tapped Jason Benetti to serve as its lead play-by-play announcer. The move marks a significant shift in the MLB broadcasting landscape, as the Sunday night showcase moves to NBC and Peacock after 26 seasons on ESPN.

Benetti, 42, arrives at NBC after a tenure with Fox Sports that began in 2022, where he called a variety of sports including the NFL and college basketball. Fox allowed Benetti to exit his contract early to pursue this role, which positions him as the primary voice for one of the most coveted windows in professional sports.

A Star-Studded Opening Day Doubleheader

The network’s return to the diamond kicks off on Thursday, March 26, with a star-studded Opening Day doubleheader presented by Adobe. The coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, featuring the Pittsburgh Pirates visiting the Latest York Mets at Citi Field. This matchup will showcase reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes against Juan Soto.

The afternoon broadcast will be called by play-by-play voice Matt Vasgersian, joined by analysts Al Leiter and Neil Walker. Pregame coverage will be hosted by Ahmed Fareed and analyst Adam Ottavino.

The primetime spotlight shifts to 8 p.m. ET for the only primetime game of Opening Day: the Arizona Diamondbacks facing the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. This game serves as Benetti’s debut as the network’s lead baseball announcer. He will be joined in the booth by analysts and World Series heroes Luis Gonzalez and Orel Hershiser.

Adding to the spectacle at Dodger Stadium, host Bob Costas and three-time NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw will lead an on-location pregame show as the Dodgers raise their World Series championship banner.

The ‘Green Double Zero’ Schedule

Whereas the prestige of the role is high, the logistical demands are immense. Benetti is balancing his new national duties with his role as the play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Tigers. His opening week in 2026 became a masterclass in endurance, which Benetti described in roulette terms as a “green double zero” of schedules.

To manage the overlap, Benetti navigated a grueling itinerary that saw him call five games in five days across four different cities before the end of March. He began in Los Angeles for the NBC opener on Thursday, traveled to San Diego for Tigers games on Friday and Saturday, moved to Seattle for a Sunday night matchup between the Mariners and Cleveland Guardians, and finally landed in Arizona on Monday to reunite with the Tigers’ road trip.

Despite the travel, Benetti managed to miss only one Detroit Tigers game, utilizing the Pacific time zone to maximize his efficiency.

Innovations in the Booth

NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood is implementing a distinct format for the new baseball package. Rather than employing a fixed regular partner, Benetti will share the booth with a local analyst from each of the competing teams for Sunday night broadcasts.

The network is also introducing a specialized “inside pitch” segment. This feature will provide deep-dive analysis from either Clayton Kershaw or Adam Ottavino, offering viewers a more technical perspective on the game’s strategic elements.

This return to baseball is not entirely new territory for Benetti. He previously handled play-by-play for the “MLB Sunday Leadoff” package on Peacock in 2022 and called baseball for NBC during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The Road Ahead

NBC will hold the rights to the Sunday night games and the Wild Card rounds for the next three seasons, following ESPN’s decision to opt out of its original rights deal with MLB.
