UWM Blends Athletics and Professionalism for National Student Employment Week
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is transforming its campus into a competitive arena from April 13-18 to celebrate National Student Employment Week. While the initiative focuses on recognizing the contributions of student workers, the week is structured as a high-stakes competition for the “Panthers at Perform Cup,” with student teams vying for points through a mix of athletic challenges and professional development milestones.
The schedule balances rigorous physical contests at the Klotsche Pavilion Gym with career-building events at the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center (LEC), creating a unique environment where student employees must pivot from the boardroom to the court.
The Athletic Gauntlet: Dodgeball and Badminton
For the sports-minded student employee, the Klotsche Pavilion Gym serves as the epicenter of the week’s physical competitions. The athletic programming is designed to foster team bonding and school spirit through two distinct tournaments.
Dodgeball Challenge
The action kicks off on April 13 with the Dodgeball Challenge, scheduled from 3-5 p.m. The event is limited to 16 teams, operating on a first-reach, first-served basis. This fast-paced opener sets the tone for the week, offering one of the first opportunities for teams to secure points toward the Panthers at Work Cup.
Badminton Doubles Tournament
On April 15, the focus shifts to precision and agility with the Badminton Doubles Tournament. Also held at the Klotsche Pavilion Gym from 3-5 p.m., this event requires prior registration. The tournament will crown the “best swing duo” on campus, rewarding technical skill and partner chemistry.
For those looking beyond the official employment week, the Klotsche Center continues to be a hub for racket sports, with other events like the Singles Badminton One Day Tournament scheduled for later in the month on April 24.
Professional Development and Career Integration
Beyond the gym, UWM has integrated several strategic events aimed at transitioning student employment into long-term career success. These activities are centered primarily in the Lubar Entrepreneurship Center (LEC) and Vogel Hall.
The week begins on April 13 with the Student Employment Job Fest from 10:30 a.m. To 1:30 p.m. At the LEC. This event functions as a mini career fair, connecting students with on-campus job opportunities and internship employers through Panther Edge.
On April 16, the university will host “Small Talk, Big Moves: Networking with Confidence” from 3-4 p.m. At the LEC Innovation Commons. This session is designed to equip student workers with the soft skills necessary for professional advancement. That same day, the university will hold an invite-only dinner to present the Spark Discovery Award, highlighting how student roles can spark lifelong careers.
The professional track continues on April 17 with “Vogel Palooza” at Vogel Hall from 10 a.m. To 2 p.m. This event provides practical career assets, including access to the Career Closet and professional photography services, alongside more casual offerings like doughnuts.
Community Impact and Campus Spirit
To round out the experience, UWM is incorporating elements of community service and campus culture. On April 14, “Spirit Day” will take place at Spaights Plaza from noon to 12:45 p.m., featuring music, food, and appearances by the university mascot, Pounce.
The week concludes on April 18 with “Make a Difference Day.” Operating from 9 a.m. To 1 p.m. Out of the SET-Union Office, this city-wide volunteer effort sees students and co-workers leaving campus to aid older adults in the Milwaukee community prepare their yards and neighborhoods for the spring season.
