Trungelliti Reaches Top 100 in Marrakech, Could Be Oldest First-Timer in 50 Years

Trungelliti Reaches Quarterfinals in Marrakech, Nears Top 100 Milestone

The Argentine veteran could become the oldest player in 50 years to break into the world’s top 100.

Marrakech, Morocco – Marco Trungelliti continues to defy expectations at the Grand Prix Hassan II, securing a quarterfinal berth on Wednesday and moving within striking distance of a career-high ranking. The 36-year-old’s run in Marrakech has been particularly noteworthy as a potential milestone: he could become the oldest player in half a century to crack the top 100 of the PIF ATP Rankings, depending on his performance this week and results elsewhere.

Trungelliti, who entered the tournament through qualifying, defeated No. 5 seed Kamil Majchrzak 7-6(4), 6-3 in a hard-fought match lasting one hour and 47 minutes. The victory propelled him to No. 100 in the live ATP rankings, a significant achievement for a player who has patiently pursued this goal throughout his career.

However, Trungelliti’s ascent isn’t guaranteed. Six other players competing this week – Dino Prizmic, Titouan Droguet, Daniel Merida (at the ATP 250 in Bucharest) and Alex Bolt, Mackenzie McDonald, and Adam Walton (at the Houston tournament) – could surpass him in the rankings if they win their respective titles. Further success in Marrakech is crucial for the Argentine.

Should he maintain his position, Trungelliti would become the oldest player to debut in the Top 100 since 1975, surpassing the record currently held by Spain’s Daniel Muñoz de la Nava, who achieved the feat at 33 years and 214 days old on August 31, 2015. Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos previously held a similar distinction, reaching the top 100 at 33 years and 213 days on March 3, 2014.

This marks the third time Trungelliti has reached the quarterfinal stage of an ATP Tour tournament. He previously achieved this feat in Umag in 2018, where he reached the semifinals – his best result at this level – and in Sao Paulo in 2019.

The win over Majchrzak, his first against a Top 100 opponent since defeating Sebastian Ofner (ranked No. 50) in Hamburg in 2024, was built on a strong serving performance. Trungelliti landed 88% of his first serves (35/40), according to Infosys ATP statistics, and didn’t face a single break point while converting one of his 12 opportunities. It’s a testament to his resilience and improved form.

In the quarterfinals, Trungelliti will face another seeded opponent, No. 3 seed Corentin Moutet. Moutet advanced with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory over local wildcard Taha Baadi in just 64 minutes. Baadi had previously upset Australian Aleksandar Vukic in three sets during his opening-round match.

This will be the first Lexus ATP Head2Head encounter between Moutet and Trungelliti on the clay courts of Marrakech.

Top seed Luciano Darderi also began his title defense with a straight-sets win over Mattia Bellucci, 6-4, 6-2. The No. 19 ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings will face either No. 8 seed Yannick Hanfmann, whom he has defeated in all three previous meetings, or wildcard Karim Bennani in the quarterfinals.

Darderi won his first ATP Tour title at the ATP 250 in Córdoba in 2024 and followed that up with a victory in Marrakech last year. He has since added three more titles to his resume (Bastad and Umag in 2025, and Santiago in 2026), but this week marks the first time he is defending an ATP title in Morocco.

“I am remarkably happy to be back here after last year,” Darderi said after his 78-minute victory over Bellucci. “Returning here is a special feeling. It’s the first time I’m coming back to defend a title, so I’m very happy to be here. I will do my best to defend it this year.”

The Grand Prix Hassan II continues to provide compelling storylines, and Marco Trungelliti’s quest for a top 100 ranking is undoubtedly one of the most captivating. His journey, marked by perseverance and a late-career surge, is capturing the attention of tennis fans worldwide.

Next up for Trungelliti is his quarterfinal clash with Corentin Moutet. Fans can follow live scores and updates on the official ATP Tour website and social media channels.
