Falaise, Normandy – The Entente Sportive Falaisienne (ESF) badminton club has appointed Aurélien Maurin as its new president, following the death of longtime leader Gisèle Maurin in January. The election took place Tuesday evening at the Guillaume gymnasium, marking a poignant moment for the club as members honored Maurin’s legacy.
Gisèle Maurin, 59, passed away after a long illness, leaving a significant void in the Falaise sporting community. She had been a driving force behind the ESF badminton club for several years, having previously excelled in athletics, and handball. According to reports, Maurin was a passionate competitor, representing the club at both national and international levels, including participation in World and European championships.
The assembly began with a tribute to Maurin, recognizing her dedication and contributions to the club. Lionel Maurin explained that the meeting would transition from a standard general assembly to an extraordinary one to address the presidential vacancy. The club’s financial report indicated a healthy surplus of €5,159 at the end of the fiscal year, up from €2,821 at the beginning, largely due to revenue generated from a recent tournament – approximately €1,800.
In addition to electing a new president, the ESF badminton club is bolstering its organizational structure. Three new members – Damien Blanchart, Flavie Faget, and Willy Seguin – have joined the committee to lead thematic commissions focusing on leisure activities, competitions, youth development, tournaments, refereeing, and interclub relations. This expansion aims to broaden the club’s reach and enhance its offerings.
Alongside Aurélien Maurin’s appointment as president, the newly elected bureau includes Florian Mouchel as vice-president, Alexandre Riou as second vice-president, Annie Rivière as secretary, and Lionel Maurin as treasurer. Rounding out the committee are Hanz Bomal, Pol Founier, Mickael Legrives, François Lhermenier (who will depart mid-year), and Claire Savary-Gagez.
The club similarly announced plans to utilize received donations to purchase new equipment for its youth programs and to welcome a service civique volunteer to assist with club operations. This investment in youth development underscores the ESF badminton club’s commitment to fostering the next generation of players.
The ESF badminton club’s recent successes include securing two bronze medals in the veterans’ category at the French Championships and achieving multiple podium finishes at the Normandy Championships. These achievements demonstrate the club’s continued competitiveness and dedication to excellence.
The transition in leadership comes at a crucial time for the club, as it looks to build on its recent successes and continue to provide opportunities for badminton enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels in the Falaise region. The club’s next scheduled event is a youth training camp in July, providing a platform for young players to hone their skills and develop their passion for the sport.
The ESF badminton club encourages community members to stay updated on its activities and events through its official Facebook page.
