Evenepoel Reflects on Catalunya, Eyes Ardennes After Catalunya Setback
Vielha, Spain – Remco Evenepoel is looking to regroup and refocus after a challenging Volta a Catalunya, marked by a crash that hampered his overall performance. The Belgian rider, now competing for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, finished fifth overall but acknowledged the incident significantly impacted his chances. “That fall took away a lot of my opportunities,” Evenepoel said, reflecting on a week of highs and lows in the Spanish race.
The 2026 Volta a Catalunya proved to be a rollercoaster for Evenepoel, who demonstrated flashes of his renowned attacking prowess, particularly in the final stage. Despite multiple attacks, he ultimately finished third in the stage, behind Dorian Godon and a surprising stage winner, Brady Gilmore of NSN Cycling. “There was a lot of headwind on the local lap, so it didn’t really perform out for me as an attacker. I did have a gap, but Mas [Pedersen] wanted to ride it back, for some reason. Then the focus immediately shifted to the sprint,” Evenepoel explained.
Evenepoel, who joined Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe after six seasons with Soudal Quick-Step, expressed no frustration with the result, acknowledging the competitive field. “There were a lot of riders who had a chance in this stage. Jonas [Vingegaard] also rode very defensively, as he did throughout the week. There was nothing I could do about that.” He also noted a slight miscalculation in timing his final push for the line. “I just thought the finish was closer after the corner, so I maybe went a bit too early. But, you have to proceed all-out then.”
The crash, however, proved more significant than initially thought. “Yes, the fall took away a lot of my chances – a large part of my body was open. I also had some stiff muscles and a stiff lower back, which took away a few percent,” Evenepoel admitted. Despite the setback, he was pleased to finish the race alongside teammate Lipo Lipowitz.
As Remco Evenepoel begins his first season with Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, the team’s initial plan remains focused on a conservative approach to build familiarity. Team CEO Ralph Denk emphasized the long-term vision, stating, “We have a clear plan with Remco. Of course, all of Belgium would love to notice him compete in the biggest and most important race the country has. I count myself among them. But only at the right time. And he still has ten years for that.”
Evenepoel’s immediate focus now shifts to the Ardennes Classics. “No, we are not going to change our program. That is something for next year,” he stated firmly. “I’m going to spend two days in Belgium and then head to Spain to prepare for the Ardennes Classics. There’s more to be gained there for me.” This decision comes after the team opted to retain Evenepoel out of the Tour of Flanders, citing the need for a measured approach in his first year with the squad. Cyclingflash.com reported on the team’s rationale, emphasizing the importance of allowing Evenepoel time to integrate and develop within the team structure.
The Ardennes Classics, including the Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, represent a different challenge for Evenepoel, one that aligns with his current form and the team’s strategic objectives. The team will not race the Brabantse Pijl following the Flèche Wallonne.
Evenepoel’s performance in Catalunya, despite the crash, underscores his resilience and determination. While a victory in the race may have been beyond reach this year, his continued pursuit of excellence signals a promising future with Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. The team will now turn its attention to supporting Evenepoel’s preparation for the Ardennes Classics, where he hopes to demonstrate his capabilities on a different terrain.
Next up for Remco Evenepoel is the Amstel Gold Race, scheduled for April 20th, followed by Liège-Bastogne-Liège on April 27th. Fans can follow updates and results on the official Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe website and through official race channels.
