Anton Frondell: NHL Scout Predicts Top-Six Role & Captaincy Potential for Blackhawks Star

The Chicago Blackhawks may have found something special in 18-year-old forward Anton Frondell. After a sensational start to his NHL career, the Swedish rookie is already turning heads, not just with his on-ice performance, but with his maturity and work ethic. Veteran NHL scout Mats Hallin, a Stanley Cup champion himself, believes Frondell is poised for a long and successful career in the league and potentially even a leadership role down the line.

Frondell’s journey to the NHL began with a strong showing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he tallied 20 goals last season while playing for Djurgården. That performance caught the eye of the Blackhawks, who selected him third overall in the 2025 NHL Draft. Following Djurgården’s playoff exit, Chicago quickly brought Frondell over to North America, where he immediately cracked the lineup, registering four assists in his first four NHL games. The transition hasn’t been without its adjustments, but Frondell appears to be handling the challenges with remarkable poise.

“A Joy to Watch”: Hallin on Frondell’s Potential

Mats Hallin, who has been scouting Frondell for several years, isn’t surprised by the young forward’s quick adaptation to the NHL. “He will play top-six in Chicago and he has an extraordinary future there,” Hallin told hockeysverige.se. “Surely also a captain material when the time comes.” Hallin emphasized Frondell’s well-rounded game, noting his size, skill, and strong shot. “It’s not hard to scout a guy like that; everyone who works in this field has noticed him. Notice no surprises with this kid.”

Hallin’s assessment aligns with the Blackhawks’ own evaluation of Frondell. Chicago’s general manager, Kyle Davidson, spoke highly of the forward’s ability to play a “heavy game” and his projectability to the NHL. Davidson noted Frondell’s ability to play both a skilled and physical game, a quality that is increasingly valuable in today’s NHL. The Blackhawks clearly saw something special in Frondell, and they weren’t alone. According to Hallin, the team was down to Frondell or Michael Misa when making their draft selection.

Hallin believes Frondell possesses a rare combination of talent and character. “The unique sides are his character, what kind of person he is,” Hallin explained. “He is also exceptionally diligent and meticulous in his training.” Hallin recounted an observation from the World Junior Championships, where Frondell immediately began refueling after a game, demonstrating a proactive approach to recovery and preparation. “He thinks one step ahead and leaves nothing to chance. He trains hard, his shot is ‘major league,’ his hockey sense, his passes…”

Hallin highlighted a recent example of Frondell’s hockey IQ, noting how he and Connor Bedard were directing the Blackhawks’ power play. “It’s a joy to watch him,” Hallin said. “Now it’s up to them over there to develop him even more.”

Development in Djurgården and Potential for International Play

While Frondell has quickly made an impact in the NHL, Hallin believes his development in Djurgården was crucial. He did, however, express a belief that Djurgården might have benefited from utilizing Frondell more as a center. “I have always wanted him as a center, but Djurgården has chosen to play him as a winger,” Hallin said. “We reasoned that if he just plays, it doesn’t matter where he plays. Regardless, he will develop. I suppose Djurgården would have benefited from having him as a center and letting him be more involved.”

Looking ahead, Hallin believes Frondell could be a valuable addition to the Swedish national team, potentially participating in the upcoming World Championship tournament. “Yes, I think so,” Hallin stated when asked about Frondell’s potential for international play. The opportunity would provide Frondell with valuable experience on the international stage and allow him to represent his country.

Hallin is confident in the Blackhawks’ future, believing that their young core, including Frondell, will lead the team back to contention within the next few years. “We have a young team with several players who are as young as him,” Hallin said. “Give this team a few more years together, and with a few more additions, Chicago will be good again in around three years.”

Frondell’s mental fortitude is also a key attribute, according to Hallin. “Above all, it shows now that he has a strong psyche and is mentally strong, at least from what I’ve seen so far,” Hallin noted. He acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to life in the United States but expressed confidence in Frondell’s ability to handle them.

Hallin’s final assessment is unequivocal: Frondell is a future top-six forward with the potential to become a captain for the Blackhawks. “He will play top-six in Chicago and he has an extraordinary future there. Surely also a captain material when the time comes,” Hallin concluded.

The Blackhawks next game is scheduled for April 3rd against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center in Chicago. Fans will be eager to see Frondell continue to develop and contribute to the team’s rebuilding efforts. Keep an eye on Archysport for continued coverage of Anton Frondell and the Chicago Blackhawks.
