Polisportiva Messina Revives Water Polo with Youth Program & Future Stars

Messina, Italy – The Polisportiva Messina is making waves in the world of Italian water polo, embarking on an ambitious project to cultivate the next generation of talent. Building on a storied history that includes a stint in Serie A1, the club is reinvesting in its future, starting with a group of young athletes and a commitment to grassroots development.

The initiative’s foundation is the “Vittorio Magazzù” pool in Sant’Agata, where children began to discover the sport during the summer of 2025. Spearheading the effort is champion water polo player Massimo Giacoppo, who is lending his expertise to guide these budding athletes. The program isn’t just about honing technical skills; it’s about instilling positive values and fostering a love for the game.

“We started from the base, with the youngest players, to be able to intervene on the technical and behavioral aspects,” Giacoppo explained. “This is our second year and we have registered for the Under 12 championship. The first successes are starting to arrive after a normal ‘apprenticeship.’ Obviously, we are at the beginning of a path that aims high in the long term. These are the players who will have to represent the pillars of the future.”

The Polisportiva Messina’s resurgence comes at a time when Italian water polo is seeking to maintain its competitive edge on the international stage. The sport has a rich tradition in Italy, and clubs like Messina are vital to ensuring a steady pipeline of talent. The focus on youth development is a strategic move to address long-term sustainability and build a team capable of challenging for national honors.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this project is the strong involvement of parents. The program intentionally started small, creating a close-knit, family-like atmosphere. “Starting with a numerically small group, an almost family-like setting was created, so there is a great bond and respect between the boys and a passionate interest from their parents,” Giacoppo noted. “The various components are united by the same enthusiasm, which produces energy and compactness of intent.”

The “Magazzù” pool itself is central to the program’s success. Set to reopen in the coming months, the facility provides a dedicated space for training and recreation. Giacoppo emphasized the importance of the pool as a hub for the young athletes, a place where they can socialize, have fun, and develop a sense of community. “Our pool is the base, it represents the ideal place to be together, both during training and in moments of leisure. At the lido, at the bar and on the beach, the young people spend entire days, finding the pleasure of healthy fun, without – concludes Giacoppo – the distractions of modern society and with the sharing of common interests.”

On the competitive front, the “Esordienti” (Rookie) team recently participated in two stages of the regional tournament held at the Cittadella Sportiva Universitaria swimming facility. The team achieved a positive record, winning three out of five matches, and demonstrating a contagious enthusiasm for growth. This early success is a promising sign for the future of the program.

The Polisportiva Messina’s commitment to water polo extends beyond the pool. The club recognizes the importance of creating a holistic environment that supports the physical, mental, and social well-being of its young athletes. This approach, combined with the guidance of experienced coaches like Massimo Giacoppo, is laying the foundation for a bright future for the club and for the sport in Messina.

Looking ahead, the Polisportiva Messina will continue to develop its youth program, with plans to expand its reach and offer opportunities to even more young athletes. The club’s ultimate goal is to restore its former glory and once again become a force to be reckoned with in Italian water polo. The Under 12 team’s next competition is yet to be announced, but the club will provide updates on its official channels.
