Newark, N.J. – Anton Frondell, the 18-year-old rookie sensation, continues to make a strong impression for the Chicago Blackhawks. After being recently promoted from Djurgården, Frondell recorded two assists Sunday night against the New Jersey Devils, showcasing his offensive capabilities in a new role as center. Despite the Blackhawks falling to the Devils 5-3, Frondell’s performance has drawn praise from his coach and is quickly making him a fan favorite.
The young Swede has quickly adapted to the speed and physicality of the NHL, registering four points in his first four games. This impressive start has not gone unnoticed by Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill, who lauded Frondell’s work ethic and hockey sense.
New Role, Same Results
Against the Devils, Frondell was given the opportunity to play center, skating between veteran forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Ilja Mikheyev. This marked a shift from his previous assignments on the wing, and a return to a position he occasionally played with Djurgården in the Swedish Hockey League. While with Djurgården, the coaching staff felt Frondell focused too much on defensive reliability, potentially limiting his offensive upside. Blashill, however, saw potential for Frondell to thrive at center for the Blackhawks.
“He did good. He’s not even a week into his NHL career, and he was playing against some really good players. I thought he looked good. He has a lot of winning habits,” Blashill told The Athletic.
Frondell himself expressed his enjoyment of the new role. “It’s fun to play center. You have to work a little more all over the ice, be involved in situations in your own zone, and help your defensemen a little more. I think it’s fun to be where the action is and where the puck is. We’ll see what happens in the next game,” Frondell said, according to Expressen.
A Quick Adjustment to North American Hockey
The transition to the NHL hasn’t been without its adjustments for Frondell. He recently spoke about the differences between playing in Sweden and North America, highlighting the increased pace of play and the higher level of competition. He also noted the luxury of team travel, including flying on private planes and staying in high-end hotels. Beyond the on-ice adjustments, Frondell is also getting used to a new set of nicknames from his teammates, who are playfully calling him “Frondizi” and “Fronzi” in addition to the more traditional “Frondy” or “Frodo” he was known by in Sweden.
Frondell’s two assists against the Devils were a key part of Chicago’s offensive effort. He exploited a Jake Allen miscue behind the New Jersey net to set up Ilya Mikheyev for the opening goal, and later added another point as the Blackhawks built a 3-2 lead late in the third period. Despite the lead being ultimately relinquished, Frondell’s contribution was significant.
Blackhawks Fall Short Despite Strong Performances
While Frondell’s performance was a bright spot, the Blackhawks were unable to hold onto their lead. New Jersey scored two goals within 19 seconds late in the third period to secure the 5-3 victory. Frank Nazar also had a strong night for Chicago, scoring two goals for his first career multi-goal game. Connor Bedard added an assist, reaching a career-high 68 points on the season.
Despite the loss, the Blackhawks continue to display promising signs of development, with young players like Frondell, Nazar, and Bedard leading the way. Frondell’s ability to quickly adapt to the NHL and contribute offensively is a positive sign for the future of the franchise.
The Blackhawks’ next game is Wednesday, April 1st, against the Winnipeg Jets at the United Center in Chicago. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 PM CT (00:30 UTC). This game will be another opportunity for Frondell to showcase his skills and continue his impressive start to his NHL career.
