Pavel Jekel Returns to Piráti Chomutov for Another Season
Chomutov, Czechia – In a boost for fans, Piráti Chomutov have secured the return of goaltender Pavel Jekel for the upcoming season. The club announced the contract extension on Wednesday, accompanied by a creative video release, signaling their commitment to building a competitive roster after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Czechia’s top league.
The 30-year-old Jekel faced a significant challenge last season, sidelined by injury for a large portion of the year. He didn’t appear in a game until mid-January, ultimately playing in just 17 contests. However, upon his return, he quickly re-established himself as a key player for Chomutov, delivering a crucial shutout performance against Jihlava in a pivotal late-season game.
“We are pleased to have found a way to continue working with Pavel despite the difficulties he faced,” said Viktor Hübl, the club’s performance manager and one of the coaches, via the club website. “He has consistently demonstrated that he is one of the top goaltenders in the league in both seasons with us. Of course, he suffered an unfortunate injury this past season, but he showed upon his return just how important he is to the team. He was a key component in our fight to stay in the Maxa Liga.”
Jekel initially joined Piráti Chomutov during the preparation period in 2024 and is now entering his second season with the club. Prior to joining Chomutov, the Brno native spent time with HC Kometa Brno and primarily played for their partner team, HC Třebíč, also in the Maxa Liga.
The club recognizes the importance of managing Jekel’s health moving forward. As Hübl stated, “It will be important for Pavel to listen to his body and learn to take care of himself.” The team is mindful of preventing overexertion, particularly given Jekel’s recent injury history, and benefits from having a capable goaltending partner in Ádam Vay.
Speaking of Vay, the experienced Hungarian netminder, age 32, remains with Chomutov under a contract that runs through 2027. He joined the team mid-season in October and will form a goaltending tandem with Jekel for the new campaign. This pairing provides stability and depth in a crucial position for the team.
The confirmation of Jekel’s return is a positive sign for Piráti Chomutov as they continue to shape their roster for the upcoming season. The club is clearly prioritizing stability and experience as they look to build on their successful fight to remain in the top league.
