Mexican Archers Prepare for International Season
Puebla, Mexico – The University of Guadalajara (UDG) is sending two of its star athletes, Ana Sofía Hernández Jeon and Andrea Maya Becerra Arizaga, to represent Mexico in the 2026 international archery season. The selection follows the conclusion of the fourth phase of the national qualifier, held at the Centro Nacional de Desarrollo de Talentos Deportivos y Alto Rendimiento (CNAR) under the auspices of the Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte (CONADE).
Only 16 athletes secured their place on the national team, aiming to solidify Mexico’s position as a global power in the sport. This year’s selection process was particularly competitive, with the level of skill increasing annually, according to those involved.
Hernández Jeon Returns to National Team
This selection marks a significant return for Hernández Jeon, a sixth-semester Nutrition student at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud (CUCS). She rejoins the national team after a two-year absence. The road back wasn’t effortless, requiring emotional resilience and unwavering dedication.
“The qualifier was tough, the level gets higher every year,” Hernández Jeon said. “I’m particularly happy, I’m still processing being back on the team. It was difficult to recover emotionally, because I was constantly thinking about what I was doing wrong or what I needed to improve to return to the national team. It’s been two long years, but I think the key was patience and continuing to operate on what I needed to do to earn my place.”
The commitment to the sport has been substantial. Hernández Jeon acknowledged a demanding schedule in 2023, with numerous international competitions. She focused on individual growth alongside team success, a strategy that appears to be paying dividends.
The team’s success is built on a foundation of communication and mutual support, a point emphasized by Hernández Jeon in previous statements. Speaking after a silver medal performance at the 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin, she highlighted how relying on each other’s feedback was crucial to their achievements.
Upcoming Competitions
Hernández Jeon will travel to Mexico City later in March to join the national team’s training camp in preparation for their first competition in Puebla. The team aims to achieve strong results in both team and individual events. The Puebla competition is a crucial stepping stone towards larger international goals.
“Our first step is to compete in the World Cups, where we’ll also be earning points towards selection for the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games,” Hernández Jeon explained. “Representing the university in the ANUIES National Championships is also a goal for this cycle and the start of this year.”
Before the World Cup series begins, the national team will compete at The Vegas Shoot from March 27-29, marking the end of the indoor season. This event provides valuable preparation and a final competitive test before transitioning to outdoor competition.
Following The Vegas Shoot, the team will participate in the Copa del Mundo Puebla 2026, scheduled for April 7-12. This event will kick off the international season for the World Archery Federation.
The 2026 season represents a significant opportunity for Hernández Jeon and Becerra Arizaga to showcase their talent on the world stage and contribute to Mexico’s growing success in archery. Their dedication and the team’s collaborative spirit will be key factors as they pursue their goals throughout the year.
The success of these athletes also highlights the role of university sports programs in developing national talent. The UDG’s support for Hernández Jeon and Becerra Arizaga demonstrates a commitment to fostering athletic excellence alongside academic pursuits.
As the team prepares for Puebla and beyond, they carry the hopes of a nation eager to see them continue their winning streak. The upcoming competitions will be a true test of their skills and determination.
