Baena Shines: Trail, Tennis, Swimming & More – A Weekend of Sporting Successes!

Baena, Spain – The small city of Baena enjoyed a remarkably successful weekend of sport, highlighted by victories from José Manuel Chacón at the IX Subbética Trail and Alberto Mora’s triumph at the Córdoba provincial junior tennis championship. The achievements across multiple disciplines underscore a strong period for local athletes and clubs.

The spotlight shone brightest on the IX Subbética Trail, where the Club Media Legua delivered a dominant performance. José Manuel Chacón secured victory in the long-distance trail race with a controlled run from start to finish. Adding to the club’s success, Ángela Cañete convincingly won the short-distance trail, completing a historic double for the team. The Club Media Legua’s strong showing didn’t stop there, with Antonio Triguero (1st in Veteran C category), Juan Adrián (2nd in Promesa category), and David Bujalance (2nd in Junior category) all reaching the podium, demonstrating the club’s depth and consistency within the provincial circuit.

Alongside the trail running success, the local sporting calendar also featured duathlon. At the XXI Duatlón de La Victoria, José Manuel Muñoz earned a well-deserved third-place finish in his category, showcasing his preparation and endurance in the combined discipline. This result added another highlight to a busy weekend for Baena’s athletes.

One of the most significant accomplishments of the weekend came from the tennis courts. Alberto Mora was crowned provincial junior champion in Córdoba after defeating the previously undefeated Raúl Castro in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). This victory not only ended Castro’s winning streak but also confirmed Mora’s continued progress as a player who is already competing effectively in higher age categories despite still being a cadet.

The Club Natación Baena also demonstrated its development at the II Trofeo Ciudad de Las Gabias. The club sent a team of 20 swimmers who competed in 80 individual events, achieving an average improvement of 102% in their times. This performance highlights the club’s growth from its grassroots level, with strong female participation and a promising young generation competing ambitiously within the Andalusian region.

Badminton also contributed to the weekend’s success. The Club Bádminton Baena returned from the TTR Copa Base de Alhaurín de la Torre with two bronze medals, earned by Miroslava Rybacheck (Under-13) and Victoria de la Torre (Under-17). Rafa Morales also had a strong showing at the Campeonato de Andalucía Senior, finishing fourth, and Maricarmen Espartero secured two podium finishes in the +40 category, further demonstrating the club’s strength in depth.

Petanca also proved successful for Baena’s athletes. The Club Deportivo Petanca Baenense qualified two players – Álvaro Herrera (4th in the youth category) and Junior Moral (3rd in the senior category) – for the Spanish Championship. The club also enjoyed a perfect start to their league season, with both first and second division teams securing maximum points, confirming their collective momentum.

Rounding out the weekend’s competitive action, the Club Landbike participated in the challenging BTT Guzmán el Bueno, with all members successfully completing the race despite the difficult terrain. Meanwhile, Elena Pavón achieved a commendable seventh-place finish in the Copa Andalucía in Huelva, despite being hampered by physical issues. The Team Grupo Serman also made their mark, with Carlos Tienda finishing third in the XXIX Clásica ‘Ciudad del Sol’ Gran Premio CCN4 in Écija, a 95-kilometer race, and Juan Navarro winning the sprint specials.

This weekend’s results represent a significant achievement for the sporting community of Baena, showcasing the dedication and talent of its athletes and the strength of its local clubs. The success across such a diverse range of sports demonstrates a thriving sporting culture within the city.

Looking ahead, the focus will now shift to continued training and preparation for upcoming competitions. The Club Media Legua will undoubtedly aim to build on their success at the Subbética Trail, while Alberto Mora will look to continue his impressive form on the tennis court. Further updates on the progress of Baena’s athletes will be available through their respective club channels.
