Sabalenka reaches Miami quarter-finals, Sinner & Gauff also advance | Tennis News

Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominant form, securing her 15th consecutive quarterfinal appearance on the WTA tour on Monday at the Miami Open. The world No. 1 dispatched China’s Qinwen Zheng, the 23rd seed, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round. This marks Sabalenka’s 32nd quarterfinal in WTA 1000 events, and she’ll face American Hailey Baptiste, who is making her first quarterfinal appearance, for a spot in the semifinals.

While Zheng held the edge in aces, 8-4, Sabalenka minimized unforced errors, committing just one double fault compared to Zheng’s six. A key difference in the match was Sabalenka’s success on second serve, winning 80% of those points compared to Zheng’s 45%.

Sabalenka also demonstrated her ability to capitalize on break opportunities, converting three of five chances while Zheng managed two of six. The Belarusian’s consistency and ability to elevate her game on crucial points proved decisive.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, fourth-seeded Coco Gauff overcame Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula had a more straightforward victory, defeating Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1. Belinda Bencic of Switzerland upset sixth-seeded Amanda Anisimova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and third-seeded Elena Rybakina easily defeated Australia’s Talia Gibson 6-2, 6-2 later in the evening.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev also secured a quarterfinal berth, defeating Croatia’s Marin Cilic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Zverev delivered 19 aces and won 89% of his first serve points. He will face France’s Quentin Halys, who defeated Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak 7-6 (4), 6-1.

American Frances Tiafoe marked his 250th career victory, overcoming Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (11) in a tight contest. Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo surprised ninth-seeded Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, while France’s Ugo Humbert defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Sabalenka’s continued success in Miami underscores her status as the dominant force in women’s tennis at the moment. Her ability to control points on her serve and capitalize on break opportunities has been a hallmark of her run this week. The Miami Open, a WTA 1000 event, is a crucial tune-up for the clay court season and the upcoming French Open.

Baptiste, meanwhile, represents a significant challenge for Sabalenka. While unseeded, Baptiste’s victory over Ostapenko demonstrates her potential to upset higher-ranked opponents. The quarterfinal match promises to be a compelling clash of styles, and experience.

The men’s draw continues to unfold with several top players advancing. Sinner’s dominant performance against Moutet signals his intent to contend for the title. The quarterfinals will undoubtedly provide further excitement as the tournament progresses.

Next up for Sabalenka is her quarterfinal match against Hailey Baptiste. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25th, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Fans can follow live updates and scores on the official WTA website.
