Chaumont Badminton: Local Players Dominate Regional Minibad & Youth Tournaments

The BC Chaumont hosted the 4th and 5th Minibad/Poussins and Youth circuits (Benjamins, Minimes, Cadets) at the Louis-Chaillot gymnasium on March 21st and 22nd. Over two days, badminton players of all ages competed for top rankings, and players from the Haute-Marne region dominated the podiums.

Nearly forty players from the Haute-Marne region were contenders for medals, and many achieved success. Throughout the two days of competition, young badminton players showcased their early talent on the courts at the Louis-Chaillot gymnasium. The double tournament, organized by the Chaumont BC, proved particularly successful for players from the Haute-Marne (Chaumont BC, SLO Bettancourt, and Langres). The Minibad and Poussins divisions saw sweeping victories, with the younger players mirroring that success in the single and intergender doubles categories (limited to the Benjamin division), resulting in numerous podium finishes.

Manon Vollot Achieves Double Victory

Some results were surprising, even as others were expected. Among the standout performances, two Benjamin players from Chaumont – Faustine Cordier (girls) and Emir Calvarin (boys) – reached their respective finals, ultimately falling short of victory. Both players reportedly expressed frustration with their losses, but quickly regained their composure, recognizing their impressive runs through the tournament.

Elsa Comte, competing in the Cadets division despite being younger, secured first place against older opponents. This was a notable achievement, considering her ranking (R6).

The duo of Manon Vollot and Marceau Delfosse were favored to win, and the Chaumont pair lived up to expectations with a victory in the doubles competition. Vollot achieved a double victory, also winning the Minimes series “1” singles title against older competitors.

Other notable results included Jean Maillefert-Collin and Eliott Bouillaud from Langres, both finalists in the Minimes series “1”. Maillefert-Collin ultimately prevailed in the final. SLO Bettancourt also secured two first-place finishes, with Hugo Badre (Benjamins series 3) and Louka Delanzy (Cadets series 2) taking home the top honors.

Youngest Players Impress

In the Minibad and Poussins divisions, players from the Haute-Marne region consistently reached the podium. In the Minibad series “1”, Hadrien Deschamps (SLO Bettancourt) emerged victorious.

In the Poussins first-year division (series 2), four players from the Haute-Marne competed. Léana Engrand and Milo Bana, both from Chaumont, were eliminated before the final. The top spot went to William Sevrette (Langres), who defeated Maël Hantz (SLO Bettancourt). In the Poussins “2” category, Chaumont’s Baptiste Vuagnoux secured third place.

Finally, in the Poussins “1” series “1” category, the youngest competitor, Elodie Sacco, who normally plays in the Minibad division and is originally from Chaumont but plays for Etupes, claimed the title.

Regardless of the outcome, all the young participants enjoyed the competition, with moments of both frustration and joy evident among the players. The players from the Haute-Marne region ultimately filled many of the podium positions.

The success of these young athletes underscores the growing strength of badminton within the Haute-Marne region, and the dedication of clubs like BC Chaumont, SLO Bettancourt, and Langres in fostering the next generation of talent.

The Louis-Chaillot gymnasium, a venue with a rich sporting history – as evidenced by its connection to Olympic cyclist Louis Chaillot – provided the backdrop for this exciting display of young athletic prowess. Chaillot, a native of Chaumont, won Olympic medals in cycling in the 1932 and 1936 games.
