Valdez Shines in Tigers Debut, Ready for Regular Season

LAKELAND, Fla. – Framber Valdez delivered a strong performance in his Detroit Tigers debut on Saturday, signaling he’s ready for the start of the regular season. The left-hander allowed one run on seven hits over 6.1 innings against the New York Yankees at Joker Marchant Stadium, striking out four and walking two. The Tigers won the game 3-1, improving their spring training record to 8-12.

Valdez, signed by Detroit in the offseason, appeared sharp throughout his outing, throwing 77 pitches, 52 of which were strikes. He expressed satisfaction with his preparation, stating, “I felt good, working my approach, my mechanics, my pitches, my turn. Particularly calm. I feel like everything is going well,” according to reports. “I’m prepared for my next outing.”

The Tigers’ pitching rotation is taking shape as the regular season approaches. Tarik Skubal is slated to start the season opener against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, with Valdez scheduled to pitch the second game of the series. Jack Flaherty will take the mound for the third game, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Following a day off, veteran Justin Verlander is set to start the first game of a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, March 30, with Casey Mize scheduled to pitch the following day. This arrangement positions Valdez to make his home debut at Comerica Park on Friday, April 3, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

“Right now I’m focused on San Diego and then, preparing to do the job in my new park,” Valdez said. His spring performance certainly suggests he’s ready for the challenge. Over five spring appearances, Valdez limited opponents to just two runs in 18.1 innings, recording 16 strikeouts and only two walks. He allowed only one run in his last two outings against the Yankees, covering 11.1 innings.

Valdez, 32, joined the Tigers as a free agent on a three-year, $115 million contract, forming what the team hopes will be a formidable left-handed pitching duo with Skubal. Skubal has won the American League Cy Young Award in the past two seasons, while Valdez has consistently been a workhorse, leading all left-handed pitchers with 767.2 innings pitched, 83 quality starts, 57 wins, and a 61% ground ball rate over the last four seasons.

Prior to joining the Tigers, Valdez spent eight seasons with the Houston Astros, where he compiled an 81-52 record with a 3.36 ERA and 1,053 strikeouts in 1,080 innings. He was a member of the Astros team that won the World Series in 2022. He expressed his excitement about pitching alongside Skubal, stating, “I feel happy to be with him, a two-time Cy Young.” He added, “Working together, sharing ideas and now, joining efforts to take the team to the World Series.”

The Tigers’ investment in Valdez reflects their ambition to contend in the American League. The combination of his experience, durability, and proven track record, alongside Skubal’s recent success, gives Detroit a potentially dominant one-two punch at the top of their rotation. The team will now turn its attention to finalizing the roster and preparing for the regular season opener in San Diego.
