Michael Bambang Hartono, Owner of Djarum Group, Passes Away – Age, Bridge Career & Legacy

Singapore – Michael Bambang Hartono, the immensely influential Indonesian businessman and a surprising athlete who competed in bridge at the 2018 Asian Games, has died in Singapore. He was 86.

The passing of Hartono, owner of the Djarum Group and a major shareholder in Bank Central Asia (BCA), was confirmed Thursday by Budi Darmawan, Corporate Communication Senior Manager for the Djarum Group. Hartono passed away at 1:15 PM Singapore time, according to the statement.

Hartono’s story extended far beyond the boardroom. In a remarkable turn, he represented Indonesia in bridge at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, becoming the oldest athlete in the Indonesian contingent at 78 years old. He and his team secured a bronze medal in the Supermixed team event, a feat that captured the attention of the nation and highlighted his lifelong passion for the game.

Born in Kudus, Central Java, on October 2, 1939, Hartono inherited a legacy of entrepreneurship from his father, Oei Wie Gwan, the founder of Djarum. Alongside his brother, Robert Budi Hartono, he rebuilt the family’s kretek (clove cigarette) business after a devastating fire in 1963, transforming it into a dominant force in the Indonesian tobacco industry and expanding its reach internationally, particularly in the United States. Forbes consistently ranked both brothers among the wealthiest individuals in Indonesia and the world.

The Hartono brothers’ business acumen extended beyond Djarum. They became the controlling shareholders of Bank Central Asia (BCA) through Farindo Holding Ltd., owning 51 percent of the bank’s shares. They also held extensive palm oil plantations, demonstrating a diversified portfolio of investments.

Beyond his business ventures, Hartono was a dedicated philanthropist. Through the Djarum Foundation, he supported initiatives in education, sports, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation. His commitment to sports was particularly evident in his long-standing support of PB Djarum, a badminton club that has produced numerous national champions.

Hartono’s passion for bridge wasn’t a recent development. He began playing the card game in 1951, mentored by his uncle. He viewed bridge as a valuable tool for honing decision-making skills and risk management – qualities he successfully applied throughout his business career. His advocacy was instrumental in getting bridge included as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Asian Games.

Notably, Hartono donated his winnings from the Asian Games bronze medal to the Indonesian Bridge Federation to support athlete development, underscoring his belief in the power of sports to cultivate leadership qualities. He reportedly offered advice to parents, suggesting bridge as a pathway to developing resilient and strategic thinkers.

In 2020, President Joko Widodo awarded Hartono the Satyalancana Dharma Olahraga, a prestigious award recognizing his contributions to Indonesian sports. The honor acknowledged his success in international bridge competitions, including bronze medals at the World Championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010, in addition to his Asian Games achievement.

Michael Bambang Hartono’s passing marks the finish of an era for Indonesian business and sports. He leaves behind a legacy of entrepreneurial success, philanthropic dedication, and a surprising, inspiring athletic achievement. Details regarding his funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

The family is currently making arrangements for the repatriation of his remains.

As of this writing, no immediate impact on the Djarum Group or BCA’s operations is anticipated, though the long-term implications of his leadership loss remain to be seen.
