Sparta Advances, Plzeň Forward Injured in Physical Playoff Series

Prague – HC Sparta Praha secured their spot in the quarterfinal stage of the Czech Extraliga playoffs, overcoming a hard-fought battle against Rytíři Kladno with a 3-2 overtime victory. However, the series was marred by a concerning injury to Plzeň forward Ville Petman in a separate playoff matchup against Sparta, raising questions about the physicality of the postseason.

Sparta Edges Kladno in Decisive Game Five

The series between Sparta and Kladno proved to be a grueling affair, extending to a fifth and decisive game. Sparta, having just completed a five-game series against Kladno on Sunday, faced a quick turnaround against Plzeň, while their opponents had been preparing since March 6th. Despite the short rest, Sparta prevailed, winning the series 3-2.

“It will be another tough game, but every game is tough. That’s just how it is,” said Kladno forward Jan Schleiss, as reported by Aktuálně.cz. “We are down 0-1 in the series and must start anew tomorrow. I don’t know if the lack of game time played a role, maybe it did, but we have to set that behind us. They simply scored two more goals than us, and tomorrow is a new game.”

Petman Injury Raises Concerns

The match between HC Škoda Plzeň and Sparta Praha was significantly impacted by a frightening collision in the 49th minute. Plzeň forward Ville Petman was involved in a heavy collision with Sparta’s Hyka, resulting in Petman falling to the ice and impacting his head and shoulder into the boards.

According to reports from Aktuálně.cz, Petman was initially conscious but unable to stand after the impact. He was immediately attended to by medical personnel and transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

“Ville is undergoing examination at the hospital, we don’t know more at this time, but hopefully it’s not a serious injury,” Plzeň head coach Josef Jandač stated in a post-game press conference, as reported by Aktuálně.cz.

Following the incident, Mikko Petman, Ville’s brother, attempted to retaliate against Hyka, leading to a minor altercation and a two-minute penalty for Plzeň. Officials did not penalize Hyka for the initial contact.

Sparta Secures 2-0 Victory Over Plzeň

Despite the unsettling incident involving Petman, Sparta managed to secure a 2-0 victory over Plzeň. Marek Vitouch opened the scoring for Sparta in the 11th minute, followed by a goal from Petr Kousal in the 38th minute. Goaltender Josef Kořenář delivered a strong performance for Sparta, maintaining a shutout against Plzeň.

Plzeň struggled to mount a significant offensive push following Petman’s injury, failing to capitalize on several power-play opportunities. They ultimately pulled their goaltender in the final minutes of the game but were unable to find the back of the net.

Pardubice Dominate Brno in Quarterfinal Opener

In other playoff action, HC Dynamo Pardubice defeated HC Kometa Brno 5-1 in the opening game of their quarterfinal series. Pardubice, the top seed in the league, showcased their offensive prowess with three power-play goals, ultimately breaking Brno’s resistance with two goals scored within nine seconds of each other in the 49th minute. The series continues in Pardubice on Thursday.

Pardubice’s victory was fueled by goals from Sobotka, Kelemen (twice), Smejkal (twice). Brno’s lone goal came from K. Pospíšil.
