Sinner and Alcaraz Set for Miami Showdown as Djokovic Sits Out

MIAMI, FL – The stage is set for a compelling chapter in the evolving rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as the ATP Tour heads to Miami. Fresh off a dominant victory at Indian Wells, Sinner aims to continue his momentum, while Alcaraz looks to rebound after a surprising semifinal loss to Daniil Medvedev. The tournament will proceed without Novak Djokovic, a finalist in Miami last year, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape.

Alcaraz Faces Early Test in Miami

Alcaraz’s 16-match winning streak came to an end in Indian Wells with a straight-sets defeat to Medvedev, a result that delayed a highly anticipated first meeting with Sinner in 2026. Miami presents a chance for the world No. 1 to regain his footing, but his path won’t be uncomplicated. He faces a potentially tricky opener against either Brazilian rising star João Fonseca, 19, or Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan. A win against Fonseca would mark the first official ATP Tour clash between Alcaraz and one of the circuit’s most promising young talents.

Miami holds mixed memories for Alcaraz. He secured his first Masters 1000 title there in 2022, shortly before becoming the youngest world No. 1 in history with his triumph at the US Open. However, his subsequent runs in the tournament have been less successful, falling in the semifinals in 2023 and the quarterfinals in 2024.

Sinner’s Pursuit of the “Sunshine Double”

Sinner arrives in Miami with significant momentum, having claimed his first Indian Wells title without dropping a set. The Italian’s victory over Medvedev in the final was a statement performance, solidifying his position as a top contender. He now has the opportunity to achieve the “Sunshine Double” – winning both Indian Wells and Miami in the same year – a feat accomplished by only seven male players. Roger Federer was the most recent to achieve it, in 2017, and previously in 2005, and 2006. Djokovic (2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016), Marcelo Ríos (1998), Andre Agassi (2001), Pete Sampras (1994), Michael Chang (1992), and Jim Courier (1991) complete the list.

Sinner’s path to the Miami title is not without challenges. The draw could pit him against Medvedev again, as well as Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and defending champion Jakub Mensik before a potential final showdown. Notably, Sinner was absent from Miami last year due to a suspension related to a positive test for clostebol, preventing him from defending his 2024 title.

Sabalenka Defends Her Crown in the WTA 1000

On the WTA side, Aryna Sabalenka is the player to watch. The world No. 1 is the defending champion in Miami, having also secured her first Indian Wells title this year. A successful defense would make her only the fifth woman to complete the “Sunshine Double,” joining Iga Swiatek (2022), Victoria Azarenka (2016), Kim Clijsters (2005), and Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996).

Elena Rybakina, the new world No. 2, looms as a significant threat to Sabalenka’s title defense. Rybakina has twice been a runner-up in Miami (2023 and 2024) and pushed Sabalenka to the limit in their recent encounter at the Australian Open, where she defeated the Belarusian to claim the Grand Slam title.
