Šulc Named to Czech Republic Squad as World Cup Playoff Looms

PRAGUE – The Czech Republic national team has announced its squad for the upcoming World Cup playoff against Ireland, with Olympique Lyon midfielder Pavel Šulc included despite recent injury concerns. Manager Jaroslav Koubek’s 26-man roster features a blend of experienced veterans and emerging talent as the team aims to secure a spot in the expanded 2026 World Cup tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Šulc’s inclusion is particularly noteworthy given a hamstring injury suffered last month whereas playing for Lyon against Strasbourg. While the injury initially raised doubts about his availability, Koubek indicated the situation is improving. “We are in contact with Pavel. The situation currently looks favorable. It is still early, though. The healing has progressed to the final phase, and this week will decide, as there are still two matches for Lyon against Celta Vigo and a league match against Monaco,” Koubek said. Lyon’s decision on whether to risk Šulc in those upcoming club matches will ultimately determine his participation in the playoff.

The 24-year-old Šulc has been in excellent form for Lyon since his transfer from Viktoria Plzeň, becoming the club’s leading scorer with ten league goals and three assists. He has added three goals and four assists in cup and European League play, demonstrating his versatility and attacking prowess. His ability to play multiple offensive positions will likely notice him deployed as an attacking midfielder supporting the forward line for the national team.

The Czech Republic will host Ireland at the Eden Arena on March 26th. A victory would set up a decisive match against the winner of the Denmark-North Macedonia tie on March 31st at the Letná Stadium. Should the Czech Republic lose to Ireland, a friendly match will be played on the same date against the loser of the Denmark-North Macedonia contest.

Koubek, who signed a contract to lead the national team through 2028, has identified qualifying for the World Cup as his primary objective. The Czech Republic last appeared in the World Cup in 2006, where they were eliminated in the group stage after wins against the United States and losses to Ghana and Italy.

If the Czech Republic successfully qualifies for the 2026 World Cup, they will be drawn into a group with Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea.
