Stuttgart strengthened their grip on a Champions League qualification spot although Union Berlin continued their impressive run with a late victory in Freiburg as the Bundesliga’s 26th matchday delivered crucial results in the race for European football. Elsewhere, Mainz secured a vital win in their relegation battle against Werder Bremen.
Stuttgart Edge Past Leipzig in Tight Contest
VfB Stuttgart defeated RB Leipzig 1-0 on Sunday, solidifying their position in the top four and extending their advantage in the Champions League chase. The decisive goal came from Deniz Undav in the 56th minute, assisted by Chris Führich. The win moves Stuttgart to 50 points, level with Hoffenheim in third place, though Hoffenheim currently hold a slight advantage on goal difference. Leipzig remain on 47 points, three behind Stuttgart, and face a challenging path to secure a Champions League berth.
The first half proved to be a tactical affair with limited clear-cut chances. Leipzig threatened on the counter, but Alexander Nübel, in the Stuttgart goal, was equal to the task, aided by the woodwork in the 53rd minute when he deflected Nicolas Seiwald’s shot onto the post. Undav’s goal, a cool finish after a misplaced pass from Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, proved to be the difference. Willi Orbán nearly equalized for Leipzig in added time, but his header too struck the post.
The match also marked a milestone for referee Deniz Aytekin, who officiated his 250th Bundesliga game, becoming only the seventh referee to reach that landmark. Stuttgart will travel to Augsburg next Sunday, while Leipzig face a tough test against Hoffenheim.
Union Berlin Interrupt Freiburg’s Home Record
1. FC Union Berlin ended SC Freiburg’s impressive run of 11 consecutive home wins with a 1-0 victory, secured by a stoppage-time goal from Jeong Woo-yeong. The late strike propelled Union to ninth place in the Bundesliga table, extending their lead over the relegation zone to seven points. Freiburg, meanwhile, remain in eighth place with 34 points, eleven points adrift of the European qualification spots.
The match was largely a tactical battle, with much of the play concentrated in midfield. Freiburg dominated possession, finishing the game with 69 percent of the ball, but struggled to convert their dominance into scoring opportunities. A free-kick from Derry Scherhant in the 54th minute was one of their few notable chances.
Union Berlin manager Steffen Baumgart, who admitted to feeling “a certain tension” before the match, saw his side secure a valuable three points. Baumgart made four changes to the starting lineup from their previous match. Matheo Raab made his Bundesliga debut in goal for Union, replacing the injured Frederik Rønnow. Freiburg manager Julian Schuster made five changes to his team following their midweek Europa League defeat, but the changes failed to yield the desired result.
Mainz Boost Relegation Battle with Win at Bremen
1. FSV Mainz 05 boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen. Paul Nebel opened the scoring for Mainz with a header in the 5th minute, and Lee Jae-sung added a second goal in the 52nd minute to secure the three points. The win lifts Mainz to 13th place, three points above the relegation playoff spot. Bremen, despite recent victories, remain in 15th place, just one point ahead of St. Pauli, who currently occupy the relegation zone.
Werder Bremen were without Niklas Stark and Senne Lynen due to late fitness concerns, forcing manager Daniel Thioune to reshuffle his lineup. Bremen will face fellow strugglers Wolfsburg next week, while Mainz will host Eintracht Frankfurt.
