Girona, Spain – The 62nd edition of the Pujada a Peu als Àngels, a historic mountain running race in Catalonia, has been suspended due to dangerous weather conditions. Strong winds and an official weather warning prompted organizers to postpone the event, prioritizing the safety of participants, volunteers, and event staff.
The decision, announced Sunday morning, came following recommendations from Protecció Civil (Catalonia’s Civil Protection service) and the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalonia’s regional police force). Race officials determined that wind gusts, particularly in the forested sections of the climb to the Santuari dels Àngels (Sanctuary of the Angels), presented an unacceptable risk to runners.
The Pujada a Peu als Àngels, considered the oldest mountain race in Spain, traditionally connects the city of Girona with the Santuari dels Àngels over a challenging 9.1-kilometer course with 425 meters of elevation gain. “Following the recommendations and directives of Protecció Civil and the Mossos d’Esquadra, and given the risk posed by wind gusts in different points of the route, especially in the forested sections of the climb to the Santuari dels Àngels, the GEiEG has opted to suspend the event scheduled for this Sunday,” a statement from the organizers, the Fons Grup Excursionista i Esportiu Gironí (GEiEG), read. The postponement impacts all race categories: the competitive “Modalitat A” with chip timing, the non-competitive “Modalitat B” walking event, and the inclusive category. Registration fees for the “Modalitat A” are €5 for GEiEG members and €12 for non-members, while the “Modalitat B” fees are the same. The inclusive category remains free of charge.
Organizers expressed gratitude for the understanding of participants and the support of volunteers, institutions, and security forces who routinely collaborate on the event. A new date for the 62nd edition of the Pujada a Peu als Àngels will be announced soon, according to the GEiEG.
This year’s event was scheduled for March 15, 2026, with the race set to initiate at 9:00 AM. Participants had the opportunity to collect their race packets and welcome packs on Saturday, March 14th, at the Bauhaus Showroom in Girona, and on Sunday morning at Plaça dels Jurats before the scheduled start. A traditional mass was planned for 12:00 PM, followed by a performance from the GEiEG choir at 12:30 PM.
