Ventspils, Latvia – Ilze Eizengrauda of the Jelgava-based Target Point archery club has been crowned the Latvian U-21 champion in indoor archery. The victory, secured at the Latvian Youth Championship held in Ventspils on March 7, 2026, marks a significant achievement for the rising star in Latvian archery.
The championship welcomed young archers from across Latvia who had participated in at least two prior competitions, according to Māris Vuguls, a representative of Target Point. Two athletes represented the Jelgava club at the event, with Eizengrauda’s performance standing out.
Eizengrauda competed in the barebow category for the U-21 age group, ultimately winning the championship in a field of four competitors. What makes this win particularly remarkable is Eizengrauda’s relatively recent entry into the sport. “Ilze only started shooting in January of this year, and her ability to concentrate is simply fantastic,” Vuguls noted. “She can also compose herself and focus on execution even after a loss.”
The Latvian Youth Championship differed from some other competitions in that athletes were categorized solely by age and bow class, rather than by gender. This format allowed for a diverse competitive field and highlighted individual skill regardless of gender.
While Eizengrauda celebrated a gold medal, her teammate, Emīls Zapereckis, also demonstrated promising potential. Zapereckis competed in the compound bow class, finishing in 6th place among six participants. Vuguls emphasized the challenging circumstances Zapereckis faced, having switched from a longbow to a compound bow shortly before the competition. “Emīls had only held this bow in his hands seven times during the championship, while the other competitors had been shooting with it for much longer – some for several years,” Vuguls explained.
The success of both Eizengrauda and Zapereckis underscores the growing strength of the Target Point club and the dedication of their coaches, Silva Vugule and Māris Vuguls. The coaches played a crucial role in preparing the young archers for the competition, fostering their skills and mental fortitude.
This victory for Ilze Eizengrauda is particularly noteworthy given her rapid progress in the sport. Starting just three months prior to the championship, her ability to quickly master the fundamentals of archery and perform under pressure is a testament to her natural talent and focused training. Barebow archery, requiring a high degree of precision and technique without the aid of sights or stabilizers, demands exceptional concentration and control.
The Latvian archery scene continues to develop, providing opportunities for young athletes like Eizengrauda and Zapereckis to showcase their skills and compete at a national level. The Latvian Archery Federation aims to promote the sport throughout the country, encouraging participation and fostering a competitive environment.
