Milan – Inter Milan’s pursuit of the Serie A title hit a slight snag Saturday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw against a resilient Atalanta side at the Giuseppe Meazza. The result, whereas maintaining Inter’s lead at the top of the table, allows AC Milan to close the gap should they secure a victory over Lazio.
Francesco Pio Esposito opened the scoring for Inter in the 26th minute, but Nikola Krstovic’s equalizer in the 82nd minute ensured the points were shared. The draw leaves Inter with 68 points, eight ahead of second-placed AC Milan in the Serie A standings. Atalanta currently sits seventh with 47 points.
The match was marked by controversy, with both goals prompting protests from the opposing side regarding potential fouls in the build-up. Inter, without the injured Lautaro Martinez, struggled to fully capitalize on their attacking opportunities despite a dominant spell in the first half.
Atalanta started the brighter of the two sides, nearly taking the lead in the 12th minute when Gianluca Scamacca’s close-range effort was brilliantly saved by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Sommer quickly secured the rebound, preventing an immediate follow-up.
However, against the run of play, Inter found the breakthrough. Nicolo Barella’s incisive pass found Esposito in the penalty area, and the young striker calmly slotted the ball past Marco Carnesecchi. The goal was met with protests from Atalanta, who argued that Denzel Dumfries had committed a foul on Sead Kolasinac in the preceding play, but the goal stood.
Esposito’s goal settled Inter, and they controlled possession for much of the remainder of the first half, though clear-cut chances remained scarce. The Nerazzurri headed into the break with a slender one-goal advantage.
Inter attempted to increase their lead after the interval. Denzel Dumfries had a headed opportunity in the 48th minute, but his effort went wide. Marcus Thuram, brought into the game, was presented with a golden opportunity in the 61st minute, but his shot was thwarted by a strong save from Carnesecchi.
Despite dominating possession, Inter struggled to convert their opportunities. The introduction of Ange-Yoan Bonny in the 65th minute failed to spark the attacking impetus needed to secure a second goal.
Atalanta, sensing an opportunity, began to press forward, and their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute. A controversial sequence saw Dumfries go to ground while challenging for the ball, with Atalanta quickly regaining possession and launching an attack. Nikola Krstovic was on hand to convert the resulting chance, despite protests from Inter that Dumfries had been fouled. Sommer initially saved the shot, but Krstovic reacted quickest to the rebound.
The equalizer ignited a fiery conclude to the match. Just two minutes later, Inter coach Cristian Chivu was shown a red card for vehemently protesting the goal with the referee. Inter pushed for a late winner, but Atalanta held firm to secure a valuable point.

The result leaves Inter in a strong position to claim the Serie A title, but they will demand to be more clinical in front of goal and avoid further setbacks if they are to observe off the challenge from AC Milan.
