Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s Consecutive 20-Point Game Record

OKLAHOMA CITY – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander etched his name into the NBA record books Thursday night, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 104-102 victory over the Boston Celtics while simultaneously surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s longstanding streak of consecutive games with at least 20 points. The Canadian guard scored 35 points in the win, extending his streak to 127 games.

Gilgeous-Alexander reached the milestone with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter, sinking a mid-range jumper over Baylor Scheierman. The historic moment capped a remarkable run of consistency for the reigning MVP, who has become the focal point of a Thunder team currently holding one of the league’s best records.

The streak began on November 1, 2024, against the Portland Trail Blazers, where Gilgeous-Alexander scored 30 points. Since then, he has consistently delivered offensively, with only five games during the streak where he scored exactly 20 or 21 points. He’s surpassed 40 points in 18 games and reached the 50-point mark five times during this incredible run.

“None of the things I accomplish would matter if we weren’t winning,” Gilgeous-Alexander said after the game, emphasizing his team-first mentality. “A streak is a streak, the awards are the awards, but the thing I’m most proud of is winning — it’s why you play the game. I was crying when I was nine years vintage because I lost an OBA championship. It’s why you play the game. We’ve won throughout the streak, most importantly. I just had so much fun playing basketball. Probably because we’ve been doing a lot of winning.”

Throughout the streak, the Thunder have compiled a 102-25 record, demonstrating Gilgeous-Alexander’s impact extends beyond individual scoring. His ability to consistently discover the basket has been a driving force behind Oklahoma City’s success.

Chamberlain originally set the record between October 1961 and January 1963. Gilgeous-Alexander’s achievement marks a latest chapter in NBA history, showcasing the evolution of the game and the emergence of a new generation of superstars.

Thursday’s performance saw Gilgeous-Alexander score 35 points for the second consecutive game. He sealed the victory with a clutch mid-range jumper with 30 seconds remaining, bringing the score to 102-100. After Jaylen Brown tied the game, Chet Holmgren secured the win with two free throws following an offensive rebound after a missed three-pointer by Alex Caruso with just 0.8 seconds left on the clock.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s all-around performance included nine assists, two steals, and three blocks, further highlighting his versatility and impact on both ends of the court. He led Oklahoma City to the NBA championship last year, earning Finals MVP honors, along with the regular season MVP and scoring title.

The Thunder welcomed back Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso, who had both missed the previous two games due to illness (Holmgren with the flu) and a left hip issue (Caruso), respectively. Holmgren contributed 14 points, while Caruso added seven.

Ajay Mitchell too provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and six assists. Luguentz Dort, a native of Montreal, added six points and six rebounds. Despite shooting just 11-for-44 from beyond the arc, the Thunder managed to secure the win through their overall efficiency and Gilgeous-Alexander’s brilliance.

Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 34 points. Boston was without Jayson Tatum, who is returning from surgery to repair his right Achilles tendon, and Derrick White, who is sidelined with a right knee injury.

The Thunder and Celtics are scheduled to meet again on March 25 in Massachusetts. Oklahoma City will return to action on Sunday at 1:00 PM ET (12:00 PM CT) against the Minnesota Timberwolves, televised on ABC. [1]
