Gladiators Aim to Rebound Against League’s Bottom Dwellers

Coming off a narrow defeat at home against the Academics Heidelberg, the Gladiators will look to regain their winning form against Braunschweig. Currently holding the last place in the easyCredit BBL standings with a record of five wins in 23 games, the Löwen have undergone a recent coaching change. Ramon Diaz, a Spanish coach, took the helm in mid-February.

Despite a 90-87 victory over the Frankfurt Skyliners following the coaching change, Braunschweig has since suffered three consecutive losses, falling to Würzburg (82-87), Bamberg (81-88), and Munich (80-98). The team has also been active in the player market, recently signing Bryant Crawford, an experienced guard who previously played for Bursaspor in Turkey.

New Additions Bolster Braunschweig’s Offensive Attack

Statistically, Braunschweig’s recent acquisitions are driving their offensive production. Center Oluwasimisola Shittu has averaged an impressive 18.4 points and 10.4 rebounds in his five games with the team. Point guard Kaza Kajami-Keane, who joined from Chemnitz, has contributed 14.0 points per game in his five appearances. Shooting guard Grant Sherfield (13.7 points), center David N’Guessan (12.5 points), the recently injured point guard Barra Njie (9.6 points), and forwards Luka Scuka (9.5 points) and Joshua Obiesie (9.4 points) provide additional scoring support. Ferdinand Zylka (8.4 points), Chip Flanigan (7.1 points), and Benjamin Schröder (5.7 points) round out the rotation.

A significant disparity exists between the two teams in terms of scoring output. The Gladiators currently lead the league with an average of 90.6 points per game, while Braunschweig ranks second to last with 79.2 points.

Schneider Emphasizes Defensive Focus

“We expect to face a team that is fighting for their lives and under a lot of pressure,” said Jacques Schneider, head coach of the VET-CONCEPT Gladiators Trier. “They have improved since the coaching change, played several close games, and even competed well against Bayern Munich in the first half. The addition of a new point guard has further strengthened their roster. For us, the same principles apply as against Heidelberg – we need to establish ourselves through defense. That’s what we learned from the Heidelberg game, along with the importance of strong defensive rebounding and one-on-one defense, which we will continue to build upon.”

The Gladiators and Löwen previously met this season in Trier, with the Gladiators securing a 78-73 victory. This upcoming game in Braunschweig is scheduled for a 6:00 PM CET tip-off at the Volkswagen Halle.
