Swift Current Comp Badminton Wins Big at Ponteix Tournament

The Swift Current Comprehensive High School (SCCHS) badminton team delivered a dominant performance at the season’s opening tournament in Ponteix, Saskatchewan, on March 7, 2026. Athletes from Swift Current, Vanguard, Leader, and Ponteix competed in the event, but it was the SCCHS team that consistently rose to the top.

Hannah Riego led the charge for SCCHS in girls’ singles, finishing with an undefeated 4-0 record to secure first place. Teammate Sophie Liu also had a strong showing, claiming second place in the same category. The success wasn’t limited to singles play; the team also excelled in doubles competitions.

Enzo Dela Cruz and Jacob Derksen proved to be a formidable duo in boys’ doubles, also posting a perfect 4-0 record to take first place. They were closely followed by Tate Unger and Linden Wagner, who finished in second place. The competition in girls’ doubles was particularly tight, with Makayla Gonzales and Lola Ruehs ultimately securing first place after a three-way tie for the top spot with a 4-1 record.

The mixed doubles team of Lauren Hanson and Tai Noble fought hard, achieving a 1-3 record and ultimately finishing in second place after a closely contested final match against a team from Leader. This result underscores the growing strength of badminton within the Swift Current school system.
