Angoulême, France – Two teenagers were injured in a knife attack outside Charles-Coulomb High School in Angoulême on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The incident, which occurred around 5:00 PM local time, involved a 16-year-old student and a 15-year-old who was not enrolled at the school. Both individuals are currently in police custody, and an investigation is underway.
According to reports, the 15-year-old assailant attacked the student with a knife, inflicting a leg wound. The student, a trainee at the Greta vocational school, reportedly defended himself by striking the attacker with a baseball bat, which was recovered at the scene. The use of a baseball bat in the altercation is a notable detail as the city of Angoulême has a local baseball and softball club, Les Lynx.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. Both teenagers received medical attention from firefighters and were transported to Angoulême Hospital. While their injuries are described as “light,” they remain hospitalized as of Wednesday morning. A member of the school staff reportedly applied compression to the injured student’s leg to control bleeding before paramedics arrived.
The incident has understandably caused distress at Charles-Coulomb High School. School officials immediately contacted authorities and secured the area. The rectorate of Poitiers has established a support unit, staffed by two school nurses, to provide counseling to students affected by the event. Thierry Claverie, the academic director, visited the school to express support and condemn the violence, stating, along with the rector, that such acts are “unacceptable.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are working to determine the reasons for the assault. As of now, authorities have not released any information regarding potential connections between the two individuals involved.
This incident comes after a day of baseball promotion in the area. On August 30, 2025, Les Lynx Baseball Angoulême hosted an initiation to Baseball5, a newer, urban version of the sport played without bats or gloves, at Champ-de-Mars in Angoulême. The club, which currently has 100 players including 20 women, was hoping to recruit new members, particularly for a women’s softball team. The club’s efforts to raise its profile within the community highlight the contrast between the promotion of the sport and the violent incident that occurred near the high school.
Les Lynx Baseball Angoulême, founded 39 years ago, is actively working to increase awareness of the club within the Angoulême area. They currently field teams in various age groups, from under-9 to under-15, as well as adult teams. The club is also focused on developing young talent, with 12-year-old Max Beaumatin recently selected to join the Bordeaux Hope Pole, a program designed to nurture promising young baseball players.
The next scheduled event for Les Lynx is the continuation of their season, with various teams competing in different leagues. Details on upcoming games and club activities can be found on their official website: https://angoulemebaseball.fr/.
Authorities have not provided a timeline for the completion of their investigation. Further updates will be provided as they become available. The focus remains on supporting the victims and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff at Charles-Coulomb High School.
