Brentford, England – Brentford Football Club is significantly expanding its support for women and girls in football, launching new initiatives aimed at increasing participation both on and off the pitch. From fully-funded coaching qualifications to welcoming first-time fans to Gtech Community Stadium, the club is demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to inclusivity and growth within the sport. These efforts approach during Women’s History Month, highlighting the club’s dedication to widening access and opportunity for women and girls at all levels.
Building a Pipeline of Female Coaches
A key component of Brentford’s strategy is the “Built to Belong in Coaching” program, a new initiative designed to address the declining number of female coaches in England. Recent research from YouGov, commissioned by UK Coaching, revealed a concerning drop from 44% female coaches in 2022 to just 38% in 2024. To combat this trend, Brentford will fully fund eight women to obtain essential coaching qualifications. Participants will be nominated through the club’s community engagement partners, ensuring the program reaches those who may not otherwise have access to such opportunities.
The program offers participants the chance to complete either The Football Association’s (FA) Introduction to Coaching Football course (Level 1) or a Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) C Diploma. Beyond the qualifications themselves, the program will provide ongoing professional development and networking opportunities, fostering a supportive community for aspiring female coaches. Carly Williams, head coach of Brentford Women, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Strong female coaches and role models are needed to help the game thrive. By funding these qualifications and creating opportunities to learn, connect and develop, the club is helping more women take that first step, or next step in their coaching journey.”
Fan Engagement and Accessibility
Brentford is similarly focused on making matchdays more accessible and welcoming for women, and girls. Building on the success of its “first-time fans” initiative launched last season, the club is partnering with Her Game Too to host another fixture specifically for women and girls who have never attended a Premier League match. A limited number of tickets are available for the Bees’ upcoming match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 16th at 8:00 PM at Gtech Community Stadium, as well as for future Brentford games.
Recognizing that attending a match can be daunting for first-time attendees, the initiative provides a supportive environment with a small group of like-minded fans and assistance from Brentford staff. Women and girls interested in applying can do so through the club’s online form. This program directly addresses barriers to entry and aims to cultivate a new generation of Brentford supporters.
Community Investment and Financial Support
The club’s commitment extends beyond programs and initiatives. During a recent fixture between Brentford Women and Saltdean United at Gtech Community Stadium, £2 from every adult ticket sold was donated to initiatives for women and girls delivered by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust. A total of £6,500 was raised, and the club matched that donation, resulting in a £13,000 investment in women’s and girls’ football programs. This financial support will directly contribute to expanding opportunities and resources within the community.
Recognizing Women Behind the Scenes
Brentford also took the opportunity to celebrate International Women’s Day by highlighting the contributions of the women who work behind the scenes to ensure smooth matchday operations. A video showcased staff members from various departments, including media services, content creation, and fan relations. The video also featured Carly Williams, underscoring her leadership role and the success of Brentford Women in the London and South East Women’s Regional Football League.
Brentford Women, currently competing in the fifth tier of English women’s football, recently achieved a historic milestone in the 2024-25 season, winning the London & South East Regional Women’s Division 1 North with an undefeated record of 21 wins in 22 games. The team is now preparing for promotion to tier five under new head coach Carly Williams, who took over from Karleigh Osborne in August 2025. Osborne had previously led the team to the LSE Division One North title.
The club’s holistic approach, encompassing coaching development, fan engagement, and community investment, demonstrates a genuine commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for women and girls in football. This isn’t simply about ticking boxes; it’s about building a sustainable pipeline of talent and creating a welcoming space for all fans.
What’s Next: Brentford Women will continue their preparations for the 2025-26 season, aiming to build on their recent success and establish themselves as a force in the higher tiers of English women’s football.
