Family Badminton Blossoms in Kolding, Denmark
Kolding Badminton Klub is offering a unique opportunity for families to connect through sport with its “Familiebadminton” program. Designed for children aged 2-5 and their parents or grandparents, the initiative focuses on fun, movement, and community rather than competitive play. It’s a growing trend in Denmark, and Kolding’s program is quickly gaining traction.
The program, based at the Kolding Ketcher Center, isn’t about perfecting technique or racking up points. Instead, it’s about shared experiences, laughter, and creating positive memories on the court. Activities incorporate balloons, shuttlecocks, playful games, and plenty of physical activity, all tailored to the developmental stage of young children. The only requirement for participation is having at least one child between the ages of two and five.
How it Works
Familiebadminton sessions are structured as a one-hour activity period, running from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Instructors are always present on the court to guide and inspire participants. However, the hall remains open until noon, allowing families to continue playing and enjoying each other’s company in a relaxed and safe environment. This extended time provides a valuable opportunity for informal play and bonding.
Program Details and Practical Information
The program began on January 31st and runs for 11 Saturdays. Families have the flexibility to attend as many sessions as they like, with no obligation to commit to the entire series. The cost is 400 Danish Krone per family, regardless of the number of children or adults participating. Spaces are limited to a maximum of 20 families, ensuring a comfortable and personalized experience.
Two dedicated and enthusiastic coaches lead the activities, providing guidance and encouragement. Upon joining, each child aged 2-5 receives their own badminton racket and a drink bottle. Rackets are similarly available for parents and grandparents to borrow.
A Typical Session Breakdown
Each hour-long session follows a structured format designed to maximize fun and engagement:
- 10 minutes of joint warm-up with games and laughter
- 20 minutes of motor skill and play-based activities
- 30 minutes of free play with rackets, balloons, and shuttlecocks
Following the structured session, families are welcome to enjoy coffee and socialize in a communal area, fostering a sense of community and connection.
