Victoria Mboko Wins at Indian Wells: Advances to Round 3 | WTA Tennis News

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Victoria Mboko made a successful start to her first appearance at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, defeating Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in straight sets. The 19-year-ancient, currently ranked 10th in the world, navigated a fluctuating performance to secure a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Mboko, making her debut in one of the most prestigious tournaments globally and as a Top 10 player in the WTA rankings, faced challenges with consistency on her serve in the desert conditions. Though, she ultimately found her rhythm at crucial moments to close out the match. The Canadian player finished with 22 winners but similarly committed 35 unforced errors. She won 78 percent of her first-serve points, but only 36 percent on her second serve.

The match began slowly for Mboko, who dropped her opening service game. She quickly adjusted, however, and began to turn the tide as the set progressed. A missed volley from Birrell at 3-2 gave the 10th-ranked player the opportunity to level the score. Mboko then capitalized, executing a precise drop shot to set up a winning forehand.

Mboko continued her momentum, while Birrell struggled to keep pace. The Australian faltered at 4-5, committing two consecutive errors at 30-30 to hand the set to the teenager.

The second set proved more competitive, with both players facing difficulties holding serve. Similar to the first set, Mboko conceded her initial service game, committing a double fault on break point, but immediately responded by breaking back. She faced another break point opportunity two games later and committed another double fault, giving Birrell the advantage. Resiliently, Mboko leveled the score at 6-6, winning an epic exchange at 40-40 and benefiting from a net cord on break point.

Mboko appeared poised to dominate the tiebreak when Birrell missed a backhand on the second point, conceding a mini-break early on. The Canadian led 4-1, but her opponent battled back to win four consecutive points and grab a 5-4 lead. The teenager then demonstrated her Top 10 caliber, winning both of her opponent’s service points, including a superb reverse along the line, and forcing an error on her first match point to secure the victory.

The win propels Mboko into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open, where she will face the winner of the match between Zeynep Sonmez and Anna Kalinskaya (ranked 23rd). The tournament, offering $9,415,725 in prize money, continues to draw top talent from around the world. Mirra Andreeva was the previous winner of the event.

Fellow Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov are also scheduled to be in action at Indian Wells on Friday.

This marks a significant milestone for the 19-year-old Mboko, born August 26, 2006, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her current singles ranking is 69, with a career high of 60 achieved in May 2025. Birrell, born April 29, 1998, in Dusseldorf, Germany, weighs 62 kg (137 lbs). The hard-court tournament in Indian Wells is a key event in the WTA series, serving as a precursor to the upcoming Sunshine Double events.

For Mboko, this victory isn’t just about advancing in the tournament; it’s about building confidence and momentum as she continues her ascent in the professional tennis world. Her ability to overcome a shaky start and fight through a competitive second set demonstrates a mental fortitude that will be crucial as she faces tougher opponents in the coming rounds. The Canadian’s performance showcased a blend of aggressive shot-making and resilience, qualities that have quickly established her as a rising star in the sport.

The BNP Paribas Open continues through March 15th at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Fans can follow the tournament’s progress on the official website, https://bnpparibasopen.com/, for updated scores, schedules, and news.
