Kluivert, who grew up a few streets away, beams during the opening. It was still on his bucket list: his own Cruyff Court. “I think it’s fantastic. That you can have this in your name,” says the man who perhaps scored one of the most important goals for Ajax ever.
The former striker thinks that the experiences of the square contributed to that goal in the final in 1995. “That’s where football starts and then you have to make the right choices in every circumstance. The children now come to a field that is actually completely smoothed out, I had a stone floor and had to sort it out.”
To Ajax?
Kluivert has been without a job since his dismissal as coach of the Indonesian national team. Jordi Cruijff, Ajax’s technical director, was present at the opening, so the logical question is: is he open to a return to Ajax?
“Well, that’s a direct question,” Kluivert laughs. “But never say never. I am not currently in discussions with Ajax, but I am always in close contact with Jordi Cruijff.” Jordi Cruijff was not available for an interview.
