Tennis professional Laura Siegemund was eliminated in the first round of the highly prized WTA tournament in Qatar’s capital Doha. The 37-year-old failed on Sunday against French qualifier Varvara Gracheva 6:7 (3:7), 4:6, making Tatjana Maria the last remaining German at the hard court event. She will face No. 12 seed American Emma Navarro on Monday.
For Siegemund it was the first appearance since her second round exit at the Australian Open a good two weeks earlier. In Melbourne she was the only German to make it past the first round.
The tournament in Doha belongs to the WTA’s 1000 category and is therefore one of the most important events below the Grand Slams.
