Nigel Hayes-Davis: EuroLeague MVP to NBA Free Agent Story

An excellent EuroLeague player definitely does not naturally make an excellent NBA player, or even a rotation player. The American Nigel Hayes-Davis (2.03 m, 31 years old) is the latest illustration of this. While he had just been crowned in the EuroLeague with Fenerbahçe, and even distinguished individually by the title of MVP of the Final Four, the winger had tried the NBA again last summer, by signing up with Phoenix.

But a few months later, here he is now without a club at the end of the NBA trade deadline. Transferred to Milwaukee without having succeeded in establishing himself in Arizona, Nigel Hayes-Davis was released by the Bucks, leaving him without a club in the middle of the season.

A disappointing NBA passage after the European coronation

The former EuroLeague Final Four MVP had initially signed with the Phoenix Suns, after his triumphant season in Türkiye. However, his statistics in short playing times have never convinced. Taking part in 27 games, Hayes-Davis averaged only 1.3 points and 1.2 rebounds, with an abysmal shooting percentage of 32.6%.

His transfer to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of a three-team trade involving Ousmane Dieng could have offered him a new chance in a workforce in full deconstruction-reconstruction. But he didn’t even have time to pack his bags, confirming the difficulties encountered in adapting to the NBA level.

Hayes-Davis is not the only major EuroLeague player to have broken his teeth across the Atlantic. On the contrary, players who have successfully made the transition are exceptions, like Nemanja Bjelica or Luka Doncic in a completely different context. Hayes-Davis joins Filip Petrusev and Sasha Vezenkov among the leading European players to leave the United States frustrated. Like his predecessors, the American would already arouse the desire of several major EuroLeague teams.

Hapoel Tel Aviv would have made him a priority after the failure of the case leading to Guerschon Yabusele. His former club Fener would not be an option to rule out, according to local media.
