The departure of Veljko Birmančevič (27) from Sparta Prague to Getafe was born exactly as only the last hours of the transfer window can do. Under the pressure of time and against the backdrop of a domino effect, when one seemingly unrelated move sets in motion a whole chain of events across Europe. The Serbian representative became one of the main actors of this story literally at the last moment.
Getafe were cornered. The Spanish team was not only looking for last-minute reinforcements, but also faced an administrative problem – until Friday, they were banned from registering new players due to exceeding the salary cap.
Time was running inexorably and the club from the suburbs of Madrid knew that if there was even a small chance to use the window, they had to act immediately and without unnecessary formalities.
And it was here that a domino effect began that even the best screenwriter could not have imagined. It all started with Sunderland’s unexpected offer of 20 million euros including bonuses for Nilson Angulo (22) from Anderlecht. The Belgian club initially did not want to let the player go, but the sum was simply too tempting.
Anderlecht had to quickly find a replacement and quite surprisingly reached for Coba da Costa (23) from Getafe, a player who had a minimal workload in Spain (only 339 league minutes this season) and whose career in recent years has rather stumbled than risen. The choice raised questions in Belgium, but the decision was made.
Getafe suddenly found themselves in a situation where they themselves had to react immediately.
The choice fell on Birmančević. The contact between the clubs was established only a few hours before the transfer deadline, so there was no time for classic procedures. The Serbian winger didn’t even fly out for a traditional medical check-up, according to reports inFotbal.cz Getafe had the full medical reports sent to him. There was simply no room for anything else.
The player’s agent, Darko Ristic, also played a key role, who was able to complete all the administration at a frantic pace.
After his engagement in the Czech Republic, Birmančevič is returning to one of the top 5 leagues. This time to a competition that can suit him even more game-wise – technical, open, based on individual quality.
The move is still formally agreed as a half-year loan, but includes an agreement on a transfer option. As already reported inFotbalits amount reaches 4 million euros (97 million crowns) and Getafe will activate it on the condition that they maintain their first league affiliation.
In the extremely balanced LaLiga table, where clubs from 10th to 18th place are separated by only three points, it will be a fight until the last round.
